Had a casual breakfast some cereal and yoghurt. Quickly packed up and drove for the border. The border crossing was simple and quick and we were back in botswana. A short drive from the border is Drotskys. It is a nice stop, lovely lodges, a proper pool. The day was short we messed around at the camp for a bit then headed to the pool for a swim as it was 37 degrees Celsius. A stinking hot day. The pool was flippen freezing until you were in for a while then it got better but it was lekker refreshing. And by the looks of it there will be curry for supper. Adrian's quote for the day: human insanity goes a long way.Dylan... read more

Today we were heading into the Okavango Delta. We were up quite early today to pack all of our stuff onto boats. I mean everything: tents, cooking supplies, EVERYTHING! We had about a one hour power boat ride to the Mokoro station. A mokoro is a dugout canoe. Some were actually made of fibreglass though. Erica and I ended up as Mokoro buddies which was nice, as it meant the 3 odd hour Mokoro ride wouldn't be boring. It was such a peaeful boat trip that both of us (as well as many others) fell asleep. The only distraction was the beautiful surrounds, and the wet reeds slapping you in the face as you floated through the Delta. It was amazing. Once we arrived we set up our camp and had a quick bite to eat. ... read more

Today we arrived in Maun, our home base for our trip into the Okavango Delta. Our first stop was in town to pick up the supplies for our trip into the Delta. Derek and I went to pick up a couple of bottles of Scotch, but the prices were actually really high. I guess it was because it is a tourist area. I decided to save money and have a "dry" couple of days. Once we were in the camp site, a lot of people headed off to do their scenic flight over the Delta. I used the time to kick back and relax by the pool, beer in hand. It was nice to just hang out for a while instead of worrying about getting somewhere. It was here that I found St. Louis Export, the ... read more

Tuesday August 28 We've just spent a most amazing two nights in the Okavango Delta. I loved, loved, loved it and the time spent in the mokoro is some of the most relaxing hours I've ever spent. Mekoro (plural of mokoro) are traditional boats carved out of a single tree. Ours were of the less traditional kind (fibreglass) that are more common these days but I did see a couple of wooden ones, lined with hay. They each came equipped with a 'poler' who has a wooden pole four to five metres long and uses it to propel us through the water by pushing off the river bed and as a rudder to change direction. After a three hour trip that wasn't a race (though we were definitely racing), Denise and I arrived last to find ... read more

Africa » Botswana » North-West » Kasane August 26th 2012

So we had a 2 nite sleep, a day to rest well sort of. We woke up and decided to visit Chobe National Park. It is dry, like desert dry and super hot (24 degrees at 9:30). So we decided to drive along the water front where it is greener and way more animals. We saw huge herds of buffalo and elephant, a few kudu, impala and 1 crazy zebra. we had brunch at the Sedudu picnic site. Nana you were missed here, it was a magnificent spot on the river. After lunch we headed back the the campsite to swim and do some washing. At 3 pm we boarded a cruising boat for a guided trip down the Chobe river. Despite the size of the boat we got extraordinarily close to elephant, hippo, buffalo and ... read more

After a interesting night in the bush in terms of animals, we were all up early because we had a long drive ahead of us. After a quick and simple breakfast, we packet up and left in the direction of Kasane. The road was extremely difficult due to the sand being so soft and deep but it was still an awesome experience with minimal problems except for the fact that we got stuck but we were on our way again in very little time. The parks here are extremely over priced but it is still good value for money in terms of animals to be seen.We had seen quite a large amount of animals like herds of Elephant, a few Giraffe and some lonely looking Kudu that all looked very desprate for water. We arrived at ... read more

Africa » Botswana » North-West » Moremi Game Reserve August 24th 2012

Ok so after all this driving we needed a full days rest. This campsite we were at was magnificent, there are no fences between you and the animals, it's nature at it's most rarest state. So we all read, slept, ate and that's about it. The sunrise and sunset is amazing but everyone was so chilled. In the evening after supper we just sat, a hyena came into the campsite, badgers was there everything was so relaxed. So we all piled into bed and soon fast asleep. But the nite was yet over for us. We have no watches with us so we have no idea what the time is. But sometime during the nite we were visited by an elephant. The next thing I have Alex waking me up telling me to be quiet, and ... read more

After a long and noisy night we were all up early and enjoyed the sunrise with a cup of coffee and a homemade crunchy. We packet up quickly and we where on our way in no time ready for the days events. The drive to our camp was not to bad but when it did get a little bumpy, the Land Rover powered through it with no problems at all. Upon arrival we were presented by an amazing view of the khwai river and all its resident which included hippos, open bill stalks, giraffe, a large herd of impala and elephant that happened to be wading through the river. We set up camp and enjoyed a bottle of Meerlust Merlot and ate while the sun went down. But the night wasn't over just yet, as we watched ... read more

Africa » Botswana » North-West » Maun August 22nd 2012

After a very noisy night in the town of Maun we were up early. We decided to spend the day catching up on laundry and just relaxing as well as replenishing food stocks. We had a scrumptious breakfast and decided to see what Maun had to offer. The plan was to do a scenic flight over the Okavango delta later that afternoon. Once we finished stocking up we went to Wimpy for a bite to eat and to use their free Wi-fi. At 3.30 was when our flight was booked for. We arrive and paid and are hustled through the airport, onto the taxi and to the plane, meet the pilot who seems to be a cool guy. The plane is small, 7 seats, but it's big in the right places. A few of us anxious ... read more

Kubu to Maun Kubu island was a amazing experience like the 360 degree view from the top of the island , the way you can see the curvature of the earth because it is so flat and best of all was the view from the toilet which was magnificent but unfortunately the campsites are too close together and the toilet is crap. The drive back to the main road was very long and dusty but it isn't just dust its "HOLY CRAP what did i do to deserve this" dust. Once we arrived found the main road the drive was calm and thankfully at 120KM/H unlike the 20KM/H on the dirt road. The main road was at least tarred but anybody that was driving behind could see nothing because of the huge dust trail that NASA ... read more
