wookies and tigers, oh my!wookies and tigers, oh my!wookies and tigers, oh my!

My shy tiger friend.
Went to Kanchanaburi with Geoff and two Thai women- Ou and Kite (don't cha love Thai nicknames?). Ou is Geoff's "special friend" but they've know each other for 7 months and only the other day got to know each other in the more biblical sense of the word. She's really awesome, a student working on her MBA and Kite is her friend, a shy but sweet gal. Since Ou was Geoff's "guide" I wonder if Kite was suppose to mine? The four of us paid a visit to some Tigers at the Tiger Temple- a sort of retreat for orphan tigers but they also have horses, deer, pigs, cows etc. roaming around. A very surreal place. We were there late in the day and got to witness feeding time. A truck drove down the middle of the main road and dumped a bunch of corn and the animals practically stampeded to get to it. Strange to see pigs and deer eating together. After we decide it was our feeding time and we had a fancy dinner at a floating restaurant. Yet it only cost us about $6 Cdn. each. Gotta love this exchange rate. The four of us sort of paired off - and by the end of the day Kite (who is 25 and never had a boyfriend) was joking that she now liked girls. Lianna would be jealous - I converted a girl without even trying. Ha! The ladies got the last bus back to Bangkok while Geoff and I stayed the night. We stayed in a floating bungalow. How cool is that? We headed to the main strip and bar hopped for a bit before grabbing some Thai Samsong whisky and coke. We ended up drinking on the bridge over the River Kwai in memory of the POWs that built it. I also very respectfully peed over the bridge a few times. Our goal was to stay there and watch the sun rise from the bridge but we got too tired and went back to our bungalow and feel asleep instead. The next day we rented a motobike and saw a bit of the countryside and went through the Railway museum to learn more about the history of the town. Much ado is made about the POWs (mostly Austrailians and Brits) that died building the railway but it turns out even more indentured Asian workers died. But they are only a footnote. Okay, enough of my rhetoric. I leave tonight for Chiang Mai. I'm meeting up with Ou before I go. She is quite cool and I think she wants to drill me for info about Geoff. As a good Thai girl I think she's a little skeptical about having a falang pilot for a boyfriend. His line of work makes it a little too convenient to have a girl in every port. But Geoff's a pretty good guy. Well mostly. I've enjoyed my time here in Bangkok and stayed here longer than intended; mostly cuz I keep meeting really cool local people to hang out with. I guess the rest of my trip will consist of mostly other backpacker companions, but we'll see.
