Well, as most of you I'll be gallavanting across Asia. For those of you who didnt know, there's probabely a reason for it. Let me give you a hint: I don't like you. I think my time spent in Richmond was all in preparation for the following 3 months, and my slanted eyes and yellow skin shall serve me well...I will be one among billions. It'll kinda be like "Where's Waldo", except everyone in the picture is Waldo. Those of you who I don't hate may check up on my progress and my pics on my blog. You know who you are. And if you don't know if I hate you, I probably do.

On the Down Low in Myanmar

Here it is everyone - the long awaited Adeline take on her travels in Myanmar. First the places I have been: Yangon Bago (Golden Rock) Inle Lake Mandalay Irrawaddy River Bagan. Myanmar isn't the easiest country to travel in. It's huge and the major cities are much too far apart. But I believe I've taken every mode of transportation available from planes, trains and automobiles to trishaws, bicycles, boats and horse carts. There is way too much to say about this country with such a tumultous political history. The present military dictatorship has been in power for the past few decades and there is a palable feeling of unease amongst local residents. That said, people have adapted very well and really welcome tourism. The people here are amazing. I especially apperciate ... read more

Ushered in the New Year in Koh Chang on the famously tacky White Sand Beach. It was a blast. The guy that ran the guest house we were staying at rented a truck and transported about 10 of us from Bailan beach so that we could party together on the beach. White Sand Beach has about a dozen pubs and clubs strung out along the water so we went on a pub crawl. Right after midnight I got seperated from the group when I snuck into this exclusive (and expensive) party. I really don't like it when a public beach is fenced off and admission is charged, so I decided to do something about it. There was a concert and a free buffet. But I didn't stay long cuz everyone else wimped out and no one ... read more

Cambodia has been a whirlwind tour for me. I’m hopping to cram in Myanmar before I head home in a few weeks so Cambodia had to be fast tracked. I’m leaving bright and early tomorrow morning, which means that I’ve been in this crazy country for about 9 days, including Christmas! The people here have been wonderful to me and I’ve learned about 4 Khmer words while I’ve been here (hello, good-bye, thank you and good luck), yet locales are entirely too impressed. This says a lot about foreigners who come here and don’t bother trying to learn even a tiny bit of the language. I remember hanging out with 2 Dutch girls in Laos who actually got angry because our waitress didn’t speak English fluently. Well, her English was much better than the girl’s Laos. ... read more

It's been awhile since I've had time to blog so I thought I'd just drop a quick one. Presently, I'm in the Mekong Delta which means that I'm only kilometres away from my goal of traversing the length of this costal paradise. The last time I wrote I was in Hue but that was weeks ago. Since then I've been to Danang, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Buon Ma Thuot and other parts of the Central Highlands, Mui Ne, and Saigon. I've had many an adventures but those stories are for another day. (Spoiler alert: cruising with the Easy Riders, sand sleding, a curious incident with a chicken, English lessons on a train, typhoons and tripping over my roots. Curious? Well you'll just have to wait.) Tomorrow I head into Cambodia where I'll be for the next ... read more

As soon as the bus pulled into Hue I knew I would like it more than Hanoi. It's smaller and less busy. The former capital of one of Vietnam's dynesties, the old town is built around the old Imperial Palace. It's a very pretty city. But most memorable for me was that I finally got the opportunity to hang out with Vietnamese people. The second day we were there it started raining so we couldn't go check out the royal tombs as we had planned to. Instead we decided to make it an internet morning - thinking that if the rain didn't stop it would be a wasted day. However, it turned out to be the most interesting day I've spent in Vietnam. I left Vincent alone for a few moments and he gets picked up ... read more

The trip to Halong Bay was really awesome. We were feed 3 seafood feasts a day, so of course I was in culinary paradise the whole time. There was so much food that no one was able to finish except for our table because we dined with this French Guy, Florian, who has been working for an NGO in Mongolia for the past year so he is eating to make up for lost time. The Mongolian diet seems to be entirely made up of Yak dairy products and mutton. I don't think I'd do well there. I spent one night sleeping on a boat, which was actually less exciting than one would expect. Probably because I was tired and lamely went to bed before 9pm. Something about sea air just makes me tired. Plus there was ... read more

A Viet Kieu comes home

I've discovered that people like me have a name and it's Viet Kieu. Basically it refers to overseas Vietnamese people who left legally (i.e. not on a boat- I'm not a F.O.B no matter what Herman says!). In my case I'm the descendent of. People here are under the assumption that we have a lot of money, and we do in comparasion but then again the Vietnamese also have another term for people like me which literally translate into "Cheap foreigner witha backpack." I can't get any respect here! No, actually the locales treat me quite well here. Although, they have a hard time understanding why I don't speak Vietnamese. It's funny cuz my comprehension skills (if not my speaking skills) are improving vastly and it's fun to listen to people taking about me. I'm currently ... read more

Simpsons, Friends? Must be Vang Vieng!

Alexis and I parted ways in Vang Vieng, but not before we marked the auspicious occasion with a Happy pizza party. Bad idea. Not recommended for the faint of heart. Somehow Alexis gathered herself together enough to catch the last bus outta of Vang Vieng, while I spent the day wandering from one restaurant to another. The main tourist street in V.V. has been likened to a mini-Khao San Rd. for good reason. Lonely Planet calls it as incongruous as Vegas rising out of the desert. The only thing here are white tourist and restaurants that feature constant re-runs of your favourite must-see-t.v. show. For lunch I dinned with the Simpsons; then a mid-day fruit shake with Friends; for dinner I had a date with The Family Guy. Sad but true, yet it was exactly what ... read more

After all that, we finally arrived in Phonsavan (of Plains of Jars fame) with frayed nerves and a lovely Aussie gent in tow. Let's call him dodgy Uncle Steve (note: *contrary to his nickname, Steve is a very accomplished fellow who speaks half a dozen languages (including Vietnamese better than I can) and is currently working for an NGO in Cambodia that deals with such hot topics as landmine removal, aids education and water conservation). I can't really say that the Plains or the Jars contained within were all that spectacular. Historically, they're interesting enough. Jar experts speculate that they were used for ancient cremation rituals. Being the irreverent, godless person I am I naturally took the opportunity to jump into one of them. I instantly felt quite melancholy and jaded about being a young woman ... read more

Alexis and I went to Nong Khaiw to look for a trek that was a bit more off the beaten track, and we got it. Nong Khaiw is a fishing hamlet nestled in a valley between mountains with limestone clifts. There are waterfalls and caves to explore during the daylight hours but after the sunset this place is dead. Which actually suited me fine as the slowboat ride, was well, slow and I need rest more than anything else. Our first night we were hanging out on the porch of our little bungalow when a Polish guy joined us with offerings of Lao Lao whisky. I think we impressed him with our drinking whisky straight out of the bottle abilities. He said we sounded like Americans so that ended our friendship and we sent him on ... read more
