Day Trip To Kauai

A few weeks ago, we decided that we would make a day trip to Kauai. We looked into taking some kind of boat trip or private flight, but it is too far from Maui, roughly 250 miles, so we ended up booking flights there and back for the same day on Hawaiian Air. We wanted to do one of the helicopter tours of the island. None of us had been to Kauai before and with only one day, it should show us a lot of what many feel is the most beautiful of the Hawaiian Islands. We booked a 2:00 PM flight with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. It was looking awfully cloudy up at the tops of the mountains and it turned out that our one hour flight was cut short after a half hour because we couldn't get through the pass that would take us to the other side of the island. So they gave us a full refund and we had a free 1/2 hour helicopter ride.

We did get to see some very pretty valleys and canyons. We saw where they filmed a lot of Jurassic Park and the biggest waterfall in one of the canyons they now call Jurassic Falls. One family, the Robinson family, owns very much of the land we flew over and gave permission for the filming of Jurassic Park on their property. They own a home high on the top of one of the mountains and their helicopter was in the movie.



After our flight, we went to lunch at Duke's Kauai. There is also a Duke's on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu. Duke's is named after Duke Kahanamoku, who was a world champion swimmer and surfer in the early 1900's and even appeared on the old TV show, ABC's Wide World of Sports. We all had tropical drinks and an excellent lunch.



Since Jackie rented a car for our one day visit, We decided to drive to the town of Poipu, about twenty minutes from Lihue, and go to the beach to watch another beautiful Hawaiian sunset before boarding our return flight to Maui.
