Mum, Dad, Chris and I flew out from Perth to Joburg at midnight, it was hell. The only positive was the fact we had a spare seat next to us so we could sort off lie down during the flight. There were two twins behind us that cried ALOT!! Dad had also ditched us for business class… >: (Chris and I slept for four hours and Mum for two… dad probably slept the whole flight.) We landed, after what seemed like an eternity, at 4:30 am local time, an 11 hour flight.
We got to our hotel at 6 and checked into a temporary room so we could freshen up and relax. We had breakfast (see paragraph7) I had a bacon and cheese omelette.
Then we went to Sandton city, like a giant shopping centre – city. It was pretty tiring doing all that shopping (4 hours’ worth) for a few things like shoes and a shirt then we went and had lunch at Nelson Mandela square. We went to a steak house where I had on orange cheese toastie.
When we got back to the hotel our rooms were ready and
we hung out in them for a while, at least, until the pull of the nearby pool proved too great and I went for a swim. Hell that pool was coooooooold, I struggled to do anything after I was shoved in by Chris, the devil himself struggled to muster the will to swim in that ice-bath until I returned the favour and gave him a “helping hand” in to the deep-end of the pool. We swum around for a little bit until it proved too exhausting, we later found out we were the first people to swim in that pool for a few years.
Chris and Mum were asleep and I had time to kill so I got started on a novel called The Power of One, I think I will enjoy it very much. After that Dad and I went for a walk in the area, when we got back Chris was still asleep on the pool chair.
Chris was too tired to come to dinner but Mum, Dad and I went to dinner and had pea and bacon soup which was scrumptious. Then came the unusual bit, Bacon ice cream… and now I can safely say that bacon goes well with everything! After that we went to bed, I think I fell asleep as soon as my head touched the pillow.
Today we all slept pretty well, despite the time difference of 8 hours I woke at 5:30 and finally the rest of my family could keep up with me. After that we went to the restaurant in our hotel; Clico’s. This restaurant was unique in that there was no menu, you just asked the waiter, Trevor, for whatever you wanted and, if possible, the chef would make it for you. I had scrambled eggs on toast with bacon and tomato sauce. It was delicious.
After that we had some time to relax before we went on a tour with a guide called Wonga. The tour was dark, but informative and enlightening to the darker side of South African history, mainly the Apartheid era, where Non-white people were badly abused and discriminated by white people. From this Nelson Mandela arose and fought against the Apartheid, until he eventually became president in 1994 and led South Africa on from there.
