Leaving a very cold Füssen for Münich some 200 odd km away we intended to go to Dachau on the way in. We arrived at Dachau, very hard to find and not signposted at all, I wonder why? We finally found it with the help of the GPS and parked the car close to the site. What can I say about Dachau the very start and model for all concentration camps in Germany and Poland where 43000 souls were murdered and burnt in the furnaces. We saw the killing wall (with blood ditch) where prisoners were lined up and shot, we saw the furnaces and then the second ones built because the first one could not keep up, we saw the site where the American liberators found the ashes of thousands of bodies lying in the holes in the ground. This is a very sombre place and is best seen for one self rather than read about in some blog.

The works LEST WE FORGET now have an added and deeper meaning.

Leaving Dachau we arrived at the hotel very close to the town centre. Now before going further I have gotten to grips with the left hand driving and all that but the traffic in Munich is unbelievable, manic and in general scary. The road markings are almost non existent, they change without warning and then trains appear on the same road with no warning, it is STRESSFUL.

As it was only about 6pm we decided a walk was a good idea and headed off and soon found the Marianplatz with the massive Town hall, see Pam's pics for this puppy, it is amazing, we had beer (what else would you have in Münich) and coffee in the plaza and watched the world go by. It is still very cold and we are dressed for the snow. We headed off to find a nice warm place for dinner, lo and behold an Irish Pub appeared in view and being over German sausage and schnitzel we thought some good pub food would not go amiss, we weren't wrong! The place was packed and very noisy, but the food great. Leaving the noise we sat in a cafe with blankets over our legs to finish off the night.

How does the German beer compare to our local stuff Dad? Dachau looks absolutely haunting, it's terrible to see what humans are capable of.
