We arrived here at Seward Military Campground yesterday at noon, got settled in, and then went exploring the town a bit. Back at the campground, we watched a group come in from a halibut and cod fishing trip with ENORMOUS fish; and watched them weigh, filet, and vacuum pack them right here in the campground Fish House. They are then frozen for shipping. This morning, we six boarded a tour company bus here to go on a 7 1/2 hour cruise in the Kenai Fjords Nat'l. Park. The ocean was calm. We met up with Bill and Gail Delfosse, who we camped with in Maine, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in 2010, and who are traveling in their RV in Alaska this summer; and we became for the day a group of eight! On the boat, we had a wonderful window table for all eight of us all day long. We moved about the three deck 85' catamaran all day. Orca and Humpback whales came out to perform, breaching, and fin slapping the water. Plus, we were able to watch a mother and calf swim together. Quite a show! Puffins and many other kinds of cold water sea birds flew down
from the cliffs around us. We watched seals, Steller sea lions and porpoises play (and lounge around). And the glaciers were awesome. Some came right down to the water; others have retreated due to weather and environmental conditions. The SOUND and the SIGHT of the glaciers calving was unforgettable. The preceding roar of ice breaking both near us and in the distance sounds rather like an approaching rumbling thunder storm. Then the ice breaks, and falls, and sprays out in every direction. With the breaching whales and the calving glaciers, it seemed like everyone on the boat cried out with enjoyment at seeing such wonders. Pictures follow; hope they do justice. We love sharing them with you.
