Saturday 9th, we headed south to Ulladulla on the coast. The morning was overcast but with patches of blue, and gradually cleared for a pleasant day.
Ulladulla has a great protected boat harbour, back lit in the early morning photos. A quiet drive around town, tank filled again and we headed south to the larger centre of Batemans Bay.
This was shopping day to top up the lardor, so having found a suitable park for the truck and trailer, we walked the 1k main street back to the supermarket. We splashed out on fresh cooked king prawns from the fishermans co-op shop - duly eaten for dinner same night. Very fresh and full flavoured. Make note, buy fresh prawns in batemans Bay whenver passing.
Batemans may not be the prettiest town, but well serviced, fabulous real estate on some of the sea view hill tops, and generally a good looking town.
From there, we took the windy twisty upsie downsie coastal road past Batehaven, Surf Beach, Rosedale, and then headed west to Mogo.
Mogo is a cute little town with a zoo, historical village and historical buildings. The co-pilot spotted the Lolly Shop and I was
Lighthouse - Ulladulla
Yes right on the road in the middle of a roundabout. sucked into buying a couple of treats - all for $6.00. That was a cheap treat!
We were aiming for a free camp a little south of Mogo, but it had no phone or internet service, so we pushed onto the next spot. It was a great camp, tucked into a forest, but no phone reception, and David who was some ks behind us would not have got his van in as most of the bays were already taken that could accomodate bigger rigs.
We past south of Bodella, famous for Bodella Cheese. The shop does have a variety of cheeses for purchase. Somehow they won a tourism award a couple of years back. The judges must have done this after visiting all the wineries first.
On the knob of the hill at Bodella is All Saints Anglican Church nestled in beautiful trees. Built in 1898. Still looks solid. Also, there is a Lavender Shop and the co-pilot purchased some lavender escence - good for relaxation when rubbed on the forehead. Marg slept so well last nigh, I think she will do the same again tonight.
Both couples were tired, so we decided to stay at
A reef at Ulladulla
Many a boat has come to grief on this reef. the free camp site at Quaama beside Dry River for Sunday as well, and then Monday do another coastal loop to Bega, and then on to Eden. So we will see how that pans out.
Sunday 10th - Everyone rested, pancakes for breakfast, and a day to relax. We are surrounded by Bell Birds, and visited by Gallahs, King Parrots and lots of other birds. A local walked past having taken her dog for a swim in Dry River. All we can see is dry, but after the rains of a couple of weeks back, there was still a swim hole for them as the river was still flowing slowley.
Sunday afternoon I decided to watch the tall gum trees to see if I could spot a bell bird. I am familiar with the NZ TUI and Bell Bird, but had no idea what to expect. These quick flying and ever restless birds alluded clear vision for most of the afternoon. Then luck came my way and one stopped still long enogh for a photo of average quality. To everyone's surprise this bird has a green or green/gold belly. David dug out his Australian book of birds and
found that Bell Birds are fawn and not found in this souther part of NSW. O dear, our eyes, ears and cameras have been tricked, or the book is wrong!
You can see the bird, it's colour, size (a little larger than a sparrow but smaller than an emu) and also see it fluffed up as it readied for bed.
One of the locals came and knocked on the door and brough Nashi ripe from her tree, all for free, and certainly most welcome to head off scurvy and very tasty - a cross between traditional pear taste and apple.
The day ended with outdoor dining in the picnic area before we headed off to update blogs etc.
