We arrived in Merida on Friday evening after a short flight from Caracas.

Woke up on Saturday at 04.45. The lady in the next room was having a very loud orgasm. When she finished she had a chat with her partner and went back to sleep – as did I.

Now that made me think. Was this episode the result of her partner booking through one of the main local tour agents – they are called Fanny Tours, or was it as a result of the 180 earth tremors a year they get in Merida. Our new guides Ramon and Toro informed us that Merida lies on a major fault line in the earth’s crust – a fact that our travel agent managed to omit.

Merida town is a bit rough and ready. It’s bit like a Watford market on a very busy day. Its claim to fame is a Guinness world record winning ice cream parlour offering over 100 different flavours. We tried 2 and they were average at best.

But the reason to come here is not the town. It’s the surrounding hill country of the Sierra Nevada national park. Our guides took us touring in the area on Saturday ending in a small hilltop village called Jaji. Being the generous type we then bought lunch for the 4 of us. Cost £9 (including service) and really good.

On Sunday we shook off the guides and went walking on one of the park’s mountain paths. The scenery is stunning and the walking here is terrific. There are also lots of mountain bikers in the area.

Tomorrow we leave for a day’s excursion to the high Sierra Nevada and then we make our way with an overnight stop to the El Hato Cedral ranch – and the reason why we came to Venezuela.

Last thoughts on Caracas.

When we booked the trip we could have missed out Caracas altogether but we were advised that the bad press was overdone and we would enjoy the city. This was great advice and we had an excellent 2 days there.

Hello from Stanmore
Keep up the blog, sounds like you're having a wonderful adventure. Gary and I enjoyed the wedding yesterday. The weather has greatly improved, the snow has melted, and the rain has stopped, in fact the sun even popped out to say hello. Anyway the food was great, there was a lovely atmosphere, band etc, although the speeches (too long, and rambling and too many 'in jokes') weren't the best. Although I did sit next to Eddie Ezra who benched excellently. lol Helen
