Kanchanaburi. Right that's got you sucking in on your teeth, scracthing your head and reflexly grabbing the mouse, a deft left click, google search, wikiepedia and AHAH! It's all about WW2, a bridge over a river called Kwai and about 100,000 dead POWs 3000 of whom were brits, alot of Australians and of course a flic , probably with Dickie Attenborough in there somewhere.

I'd not visited war graves before. Extraordinary sight. nearl 7000 of them. Serried ranks of beautifully tended grave stones most with names and DOB's. Many of them as young as 21. Difficult to imagine losing a son, or husband at that age. Fantastic museum with very graphic desriptions by surviving prisoners of the horrors of working on the 'Death Railway" from 1942 to 1943

Sobering stuff but worth the minor detour to the west. Anyone considering coming to Thailand to sun your arses or do a bit of scuba should get a bus up there. And there's always the street food to keep you jolly.

I'm now a few hundred Km south in a seaside resort on the gulf of Thailand called Cha-am. It is exactly that; a seaside resort but without the rock saying so all through the middle of it. Creepily, lots of european blokes of a certain age strolling, trawling the streets in shorts T-shirts, balding, beer-bellied, leering, grinning. Some with Thai girls ,some hoping to be. Probably some looking for Thai boys. Whatever their proclivity I rather feel tainted with the brush being as I cannot deny, a european of a certain age, grizzling beard and more than a whisp of grey to the tonsure and without my mate. Very strange place all of a sudden.

Will be moving on south tomorrw toward Chomphon with a view to a bit of scuba then train back up to Chiang Mai to meet the mate.

12,000km on the clock. Whatever next!

Trawlers
Nick - fortunately you don't have the mandatory beer belly - so you are unlikely to be mistaken for the creepy trawlers. The grey doesn't qualify. Suddenly you are looking quite close - beer (+glass) in fridge. Might even put a couple in there. Enjoy your R&R with Lin. Love from us Michael
