Wow!
Humpback Whale in Eyjafjörður fjord We went to a different city. Then we went to a fish festival. There was a little place to color. It was fun. I ate sushi and it was good. We went on a boat and we saw lots of whales. The whales were close to the boat. We saw lots and lots of birds. Also we went fishing and I caught a big fish. We ate it for dinner. It was fun - Sofia Journal Entry Aug 11-12. After breakfast at the gas station (we loved their ham and cheese stuffed pastry), we left Stykkisholmur for Akuyeri. This was one of the longer car rides, but it was beautiful. Not only did we see beautiful mountains and fjords, but lots of animals. We did not pass many cars, but saw lots of sheep in the road. However, my favorite part of the drive, or Icelandic safari, was when 2 horses where in the road and then approached us in the car, rubbing their noses over the window.

After 4-5 hours of driving we arrived in Dalvik. This town is pretty small, but we were hear for their biggest festival of the year. Daddy did
a lot of research before coming to Iceland and found out that there was a huge fish festival in Dalvik that just so happened to be on the date we were going to Akuyeri. It is only about 30 minutes from Akuyeri, and given there was all you can eat free fresh fish and music, we made it part of our plan. Dalvik, like Akuyeri is on the Eyjafjörður fjord.
We arrived at lunchtime and immediately started eating some delicious fish. I especially liked the salmon sushi. I kept going back for seconds, thirds, .... We saw a big dead greenland shark that at first looked like a whale. I had fun going on daddy's shoulders, eating, and listening to music. I also like that they had a big room to color and everyone drew fish and put their picture on the wall. It was a great day and after a few hours at the festival, we made our way to Akuyeri, the second biggest city in Iceland.

I liked our hostel in Akuyeri as well as the stop lights. While that sounds weird, they were really cool because the red lights where shaped liked a
heart. Cool. The people working at the hostel were really friendly and helped us book our whale watching trip for the next day. I had told daddy in Greenland that I wanted to go fishing in iceland, so when he found out there was a combined fishing and whale watching trip in Hauganes and it was cheaper and closer than the famous whale watching town of Huvasik, he decided that it was best to do the trip with Whale Watching Hauganes. (At a hostel in Myvatn, we later found out that the day we did the trip and the following day, no whales were seen on trips out of Huvasik, so we got REALLY lucky) . After booking our tour, we headed off to the pools. This one was even better than the one in Stykkisholmur and I had so much fun going down the slides.
So, after having breakfast at a bakery in Akuyeri, we arrived in Hauganes. We got dressed into these giant suits that would keep us warm. They were very puffy. It did not take long before we saw our first humback whales. We spent more than 1 hour with these giants and got
very close. It was really cool. I loved how after 3 times of coming up for air, we then would see them dive and their huge tail would come up in the air. They were beautiful. I wish we could have seen their faces.
Then it was time to fish. I was sooooo excited. The guy on the boat showed us how to do it. It was simple. As he demonstrated how you let the string out until it hits the bottom and then start reeling it in, he already caught a huge cod. So I tried. And on the second time I caught a small cod. I was soo excited. It was too small to eat, so we through that one back. I tried again and after 1 or 2 more times, I caught a HUGE cod. Wow. They then filleted it and we were able to bring it back to the hostel. I was so proud and loved carrying it in the bag. It was a great trip!

So, on the way back to the hostel we picked up some food to go with the fish and daddy and I prepared the fish and
cooked it up on the BBQ. It was so much fun and delicious! We shared it with some other people as it was too much for us to eat. I had fun with daddy playing hide and seek in the hostel and we also watched some olympics and talked to other travelers. But after 2 nights in Akuyeri, it was time to move on.....a short drive to Myvatn.
