So, Myself, Steve and Rich all made our way to the airport and got on the flight across to New Zealand. When we got to the airport we were thouroughly grilled by customs about any equiptment we may have on us that we shouldn't have or that needed to be cleansed. I denied everything, despite having shoes that had trekked throught the rainforests of Fiji, but the lads declared their tent. Not wanting to be caught up in all that kuffuffle, I left them to it and waited for them in the arrivals lounge! About 15 mins after I'd got through, they came out without their tent! It had been taken from them and put through a cleaner, no drama.
We got to Auckland and into the hostel that had been recommended to us by one of the lads we met in Fiji. I was kicking myself for listening to him! We walked into our "appartment" to be faced with about 12 faces staring at us, it all went uncomfortably silent! We got to our dorm and on the way I heard one of the girls saying "I've taken 6 party pills and they've done nothing to me" and another
guy saying "Im having acid flashbacks!". I knew I had to get out of there asap. Rich and Steve spent a few days trying to buy a campervan to tour around NZ in, but I decided I'd get myself onto a tour of the Northern teritory before Mick was due to fly in. I checked out and into a new hostel before going on my way.
I went on the stray bus up to the Bay of Islands in the North. I was unimpressed intially. We stopped at the most random places such as a kiwi reserve that held one kiwi bird in a dark room! To make it worse it was cold, wet and I with a tour group that consisted of me and 2 other wierd girls! It got better though. We drove to the spot where you can sea the Tasman sea meets the Pacific and you can actually see the waves crashing into each other from different directions. We then went to the sand dunes for a bit of sandboarding. That was so much fun, and a hell of a lot better than in Fiji! We then drove all along 90 mile beach which actually
isn't 90 miles long! That was beautiful. The next day I decided to go on a horse trek in the hills. I was the only person to book that day and so I was given the most dominant male horse and I just went out with one guide from the stables. I got to trot through rivers and up into the hills. My guide got me to Canta on the horse but I had no idea what I was doing so I was flying everywhere! It poured down with rain but all in all I had a good time.
After that trip it was only a matter of days before Mick was going to be arriving from Australia. I was so excited. I met him at the airport after a torturous day of waiting and went to the hotel. The next day we hired a campervan to do some more exploring. We planned our route out and hit the road. It was so much fun. Our first stop was Hot water beach where you have to dig holesd in the sand and they fill with hot water, and I mean so hot it bubbles!!! We decided we'd camp in
the carpark that night before heading off. Our next stop was going to be half way to Rotarua at a campsite at the bottom of the mountain, right on the beach. The campsite had outdoor spa baths so after a day being cramped in the freezing cold van, we treated ourselves to a night time spa experience. In the morning we took our breakfast onto the beach and looked out over the ocean. Next stop Rotarua, the day before my birthday. In the morning Mick woke me up and handed me a parcel that my parents had sent to his appartment in Australia. I think he was more excited than me that it was my birthday! After a nice breakfast Mick blindfolded me and drove me to a secret location! When we stopped he guided me to the spot where I could open my eyes. When I say guide me, he actually neglected to tell me when I needed to watch for steps and so I tripped quite a few times! Anyway, I opened my eyes and found myself outside a Polynesian Spa resort, one of the top ten in the world. Mick had booked me in for a spa
and a full body massage treatment! It was luxury! Later that say we drove to Taupo where I was supposed to be doing a skydive. The weather was awful and so I couldn't do the jump which was quite disappointing. Still, I carried on enjoying the day. My friend who I had met in Canada, had come to meet me for my birthday also, so we met up with her for some birthday drinks. Mick and I then went for a fab indian meal.
The next day was the worst day in my entire trip. Everything that could go wrong, did! Firstly, the skydive was cancelled for the 2nd day. We were late getting the van back to the rental company. On the way home, we got stuck in a gridlock traffic due to the appauling weather conditions. After that, 1km from Auckland, our destination, we ran out of petrol and broke down! When we got to thre hotel we were put in a room with no power. When we went to drop off the van, we got lost. When we got back to the hotel we realised we'd left the room key in the Van along with Micks
keys and my phone charger! That meant at 5:30 the next morning Mick and I had to sneak back to the rental place, get the keys off the tyre where we'd left them and get back in to search for everything. Mine and Micks last night together was ruined, I was ready to scream!
After I waved mick off at the airport in the morning, I decided I'd had enough of the North Island, I went straight to the flight centre and booked a flight down to the South Island for the next day.
