We started off our trip with a bang. Upon arriving to S.F. airport, we were informed that the first leg of our ticket (S.F. to Taiwan) had not been confirmed by our wonderful online travel agency, so our reservation had been canceled back in June! We couldn't even call the travel agency since it was late at night and closed but the airline was nice enough to put us on high priority standby, and we were told to report back to the ticket counter an hour later to see if we could get on....It turned out there was room and we made it aboard.

Anyway, today is looking up. The swelling in my ankles has finally gone done-yes! Yesterday, we figured since the life of a traveller is really hard work that we should treat ourselves to the plethora of massage parlors (not the sex ones, of course 😊 that run along Kao San Road-the main tourist drag in Bangkok (kind of like Gringolandia in Quito but with prositution and massages). I even saw a row of massage beds set up at the far end of a Shell gas station. I opted for a 30 minute foot massage w/acupressure and an hour facial. The foot massage cost roughly $3 and the facial was even steeper at $10. For the foot massage, they first washed my feet in a basin (I would too with all of those nasty travellers) and then led me upstairs to a mat in a darkened air-conditioned (yay!) room. Overall, I really felt like she worked out those knots that I didn't even know existed, although at points it was a bit painful and/or strange, like when she started roughly flicking my toes or at the end when she punched each foot and my legs. Maybe it's a transfer of pain thing.

Today we're headed off by train to Ayuttayah, the ancient capital of Bangkok, for a day of Buddhist temple visiting. Then we plan on taking a night train up to hill country in Chang Mai.
