There is a reason that Krabi and its surrounding islands are known as one of the most beautiful places on earth. And this is because when you go there you truly feel like you have entered a parallel universe of beauty.
Most Epic Sunset Ever. I've seen some pretty awesome sunsets in my life, from many different parts of the world. But I have to say the sunset I saw on our first night at Krabi is the greatest sunset I have experienced. It went on for around an hour, and was a rainbow of colours. Starting off with red and oranges, the colours heated up until the sky looked like it was on fire. When we thought it was ending it surprised us and the sky turned to bright purples and pinks. I've never seen a sky turned to such brilliant colours, and not just along the horizon. The sunset stretched up into the sky as far as you could see, and it was almost metallic-like in how it reflected off the clouds. The sunset was one of those special moments that I know I will look back on in the future when I think
about this trip.
Kayaking Through the Mangrove I think one of my highlights had to be the kayak trip I went on through a mangrove forest. It was my first exposure to mangroves, and kayaking through them was a pretty great way to discover them. The 3 guys I went kayaking with were joined by a group of 5 Malaysian girls and two couples. We were the only experienced kayakers (I use the term experienced loosely, I think I'm the only one who had kayaked on multiple occasions and that is only thanks to my Canadian summer camp upbringing). The others had no clue what they were doing and we constantly had to wait on them as we made our way through the forest. The two couples disappeared about 15 minutes in and never reappeared. Our poor guide had to go backwards on foot to find them as he didn't have his own kayak (in one of the girls' kayaks). He never did find them, and end up with several bad cuts on his legs and feet for the efforts. It turns out they didn't realize how much work kayaking was (it really wasn't that
much work) and had turned around the second time they had lagged behind the girls' group.
You would think this would be annoying, but it allowed us to take our time and just enjoy the environment around us. There is something enchanting about a mangrove forest, and I would have loved to spend more than the couple of hours we had exploring it. Unfortunately, we didn't see any monkeys or other wildlife (unless you count mosquitoes), but it was a great afternoon nonetheless.
Island Hopping It is obligatory to island hop while in Krabi and my group was no different. We opted to go the Hong Island route instead of to phi phi and that area, as we wanted to avoid crowds of people and spend time on beaches that we had to ourselves. The islands didn't disappoint. They were beautiful and for the most part deserted, which is exactly what we were hoping for.
One of the cooler parts of the day (other than the amazing scenery) was when the skies opened up and it poured while we were swimming on Hong Island. I only realized it was raining when I thought
I was suddenly being attacked by water fleas while snorkeling just off the beach. It was a fast and furious storm, and playing in the ocean with rain pouring down on us was definitely fun.
I only had a few days in Krabi, but I know that I'll be back there for a longer visit in the future. What I did see has me hooked, and I can't imagine never being back to visit again.
