Early MorningEarly MorningEarly Morning

Another early morning to see the sunrise. Once again it was worth every minute of lost sleep.
What is left to tell?

You may have read my blog entries describing both my day trip to Nimbin and my several days making my didgeridoo. Well, that was for the most part how I spent the majority of my time in Byron Bay. But there was also a wonderful beach, whales off the coast, dolphins close to shore, free bikes to ride and wonderful roommates to meet.

Let’s start with the beaches. I didn’t spend a whole lot of time on the beach, partly because I was a bit colder in Byron than I would have liked and also because I spent my days indoors working on my didg. That didn’t stop me from enjoying the sun a little bit at both the main beach and Tallow beach. I prefer Tallow beach because it was empty compared to the bustling main beach. It was a bit further away from town but not far if you ran or biked. Each day in Byron I motivated myself to get out and have a run around for exercise. The beaches were always a destination. Sunsets on the main beach were spectacular. All the moving bodies on the beach become still as

The Lighthouse at cape byron is really magnificent. Here it is just after the sun came up.
the sun dips beyond the mountains. It was rather peaceful.

As for the whales, it is migration season for humpback whales. Because Byron Bay sits on the most easterly point of Oz, all the whales swim right past cape Byron on their way to warmer waters. So on any given day during this time of year all you need to do is sit yourself down at the lighthouse and have a look off the coast and you are bound to see whales breaching every few minutes. Accompanying the whales are heaps of dolphins that come in very close to shore. It is not uncommon to see the dolphins swimming right up along side the surfers at the various breaks along the beaches.

“It’s not the places you have been that matters most, but the people you share those place with.” Someone gave me this quote a few days ago; at least it was something very close to this. This doesn’t always apply to a solo traveler like myself. Sometimes all I want is to be able to take in a new city completely alone, no one else around to influence my experience. However, sometimes it is absolutely true.

I took a bike out and had a ride to the top of the hill to get some pictures on my last day. I think they came out well
My sailing trip to the Whitsundays, my camping trip to Fraser Island, the time I spent at Cool Bananas, and most importantly to this blog entry, my time spent in Bryon Bay. Rich, Aaron, Susie, Haley, and Rachael are the 5 good looking travelers you see in the picture I posted on this blog. They come from various parts of the UK and were a pleasure to share a room with. On several occasions the girls forgot that some of the other travelers in the room were not on the same sleeping schedule as them and they caused quite a bit of ruckus when I was trying to sleep. No worries, I forgive you. The 6 of us spent our last night together at the local Oz Bake house exchanging laughs and sipping more coffee than was necessary. A late night walk down to the beach capped off our 3 days together. Soon after, Rich and Aaron were on a bus out of town, soon to be followed by the girls early the next morning.

Every person I spoke to about Australia before coming or once I arrived said that I needed to stop at Byron Bay. My 5

This was a wonderful place to head out to during the day because it was just far enough from town that it remained almost empty. Hard to imagine that people wouldn't want to make the trip out here. I mean look at it.
days spent there did not disappoint in any way. I had a fantastic time and would go back any day. You all should as well.

Next Stop Sydney…..then Bangkok.

Sorry for the poor picture quality. This was taken at night. Hopefully you can make out the sand castle I photographed that stands about 4ft tall and 6ft wide.

These 5 travelers shared a room with me for several nights and were loads of fun. Each had a wonderful accent and great sense of humor.
