Hello all
After leaving Kho Phangan we had to do a visa run to Malaysia which gave us another 15 days in Thailand. On returning from Kun Don (border of Thailand and Malaysia) we caught a bus to Krabi where we stayed for the night, a perfect stop over as it had a food market and lots of cheap hostels. The following morning we took a 45 minute long tail boat to Railey beach, although it's mainland Thailand there are no roads to get there which meant no motorbikes or cars when we arrived. Bonus!!
Off the boat, we found a cheap place to stay as everywhere had reduced it's prices as it was low season!! Woo hoo!! There were troops of monkeys everywhere in Railey and I made the mistake of feeding one outside of our bungalow as we had a few bananas in our bag. I threw a couple outside and watched as the lone monkey became 7 very quickly, I threw the rest and shut the door just as one tried to get into the room and I left him banging on the door trying to get in.
One of our favourite beaches had long
tail boats moared up up on the beach selling fruit shakes and pad thai which was lovely. To escape the sun we would go off exploring the caves (found an odd fertility cave- see pics) or chilling under a tree with a book. One day we managed to catch a beautiful sunset not before getting stung by a jellyfish and making Sarah into a mermaid. ;0) We loved our time in Railey as there was plenty to see and do and it was really easy to get around. We spent further days exploring the beaches, caves, climbing and walking trails. Apart from the beautiful beaches Railey is a great place to rock climb for both beginers and experts, it's definatley somewhere we'd like to go back to.
After 5 days of relaxing in Railey we took a boat to Phi Phi Island. Phi Phi was really busy compared to Railey even with it being low season, because of that we were slightly dissapointed that we had left Railey behind. We spent a day island hopping where we did lots of swimming and snorkelling and visited Maya beach where they filmed 'The Beach'. We were expecting peace and tranquility, much
like the film but that was short lived as the beach was packed with hundreds of toursits like us, visiting 'the beach' and half of the beach was taken up with speed boats on day trips from neighbouring islands. It was still a lovely beach though.
After a couple of days decided to move on as it was really crowded and there wasn't a great deal to see. We took a 2 hour boat to Ko Lanta and found the island to be very quiet and the weather terrible. We spent the 2 days there(inbetween the rain) buzzing around on a moped taking in the sights. We visited a National Park, a shrimp farm, saw lots of rubber plantations in and around the more rural parts of the island and spent one afternoon at a sea gypsy village, watching the local women sewing holes in nets and the men preparing boats. We also went to Ko Lanta old town where 120 year old wooden houses were still in use and found quite randomly a hammock shop. I had fun trying the different types of hammocks and will definatley be getting one when back in the UK!
We decided
we were missing the sun too much so it was time to head on to Phuket which was our next stop. One night, whilst at a lady bar in Chang Mai (early April), we made friends with a Austrian man called Christian who offered the use of his house while we were in Phuket so we made our way to his house in the southern part of Phuket. We spent a week in Rawai, bat and ball, sunbathing, reading, a day sight seeing, shooting a Colt .45, another visa run, this time to Myanmar (Burma) and lots of sofa time watching films at the house as it had finally dawned on us that hometime was nearing so we wanted to take it easy, again...
We were very fortunate to have met Christian and for him being kind enough to use his place whilst he was in Austria. It's been a great escape from hostels and hotels and we've enoyed every minute. Perfect.
Only 10 days left of our South East Asia adventure, catching a flight to Bangkok tonight, we'll post our last blog soon.
Congratulations to Sarah's sister Nicola and partner Steven as she has just given
birth to a baby boy!!
Hope you enjoy.
