mis amigas at los arcos
emily, leslee and me friday night at los arcos! ¡hola!
things have been going so very much better lately 😊 on friday, after school, i listened to an engage talk i had on my ipod (called "reminders of hope" if any of you FU kids have it) and it really made me flip my mind around. God's sent me here, to mexico, for a reason. its in his hands, and his plans, that i am here. so not being happy and willing to enjoy myself here is really hindering what he is trying to use me for. therefore! i made up my mind to enjoy myself. and since then, i really have 😊
friday night we did the usual meet in the centro at los arcos, hang out for a while, then head to la estación kinda thing. that night was our friend keisha's last night, who lives with 2 other girls in our group. so that was sad, but overall we had a really fun night! after arriving in the centro and receiving an "hola-la-la-la" from a mariachi (oh mexico) we met up with the group at los arcos (along with a few sketchy guys - one named israel and a weird mullet man who didn't say
coco ice cream!
lauren and me enjoying our ice cream in a coconut anything to us but sat at the end of the table scribbling notes. hmm.).. lauren and i shared an ice cream filled coconut (yum!!) and then we headed down the street to la estación (a discotech dance kind of place). sure, going out to a bar and a discotech isn't my ideal choice of a good time, but i did enjoy myself that night. we had to rescue lindsay bickerton from sketchy israel, because lee had told israel that lindsey liked mexican men.. ahhh. we spent some time out on the balcony overlooking the centro (so pretty!) and then danced a little when golddigger, ms. new booty, and (our group's favorite) báilalo came on.
saturday was the first day here in cuernavaca where we had nothing planned. amazing! we slept in late (meaning, about 10:30, since our bodies have become accostumed to getting up no later than 7) and when i woke up, it really hit me that i am studying abroad. i know that sounds kind of dumb, but it really did hit me that i am doing it. i'm in mexico! i definitely didn't think i would be able to do it, especially when i first got
our papá is a sculptor
things like this tend to happen late at night.. here. eventually, on saturday, we headed to las galerias (a very USA-ish mall) with the intention of dropping lauren off to eat sushi with averil and anne. leslee and i shopped a little, then split a sandwich and went to starbucks. leslee and i should both probably change our names while we are here because they are just too hard for the mexicans to pronounce. usually they have heard of leslee's name before, but mine completely alludes them. at starbucks, my cup said "grex." i hope that was a penmanship mistake, but later that night, our taxi driver tried for about 10 minutes straight to say our names. pretty funny 😊.. also, in this taxi ride, the numa numa song came on, which made the night even better! haha. we met up with the group again at los arcos, and right next door is a sort of plaza type thing where there are a lot of merchants selling things. instead of sitting around at los arcos, emily and leslee and i decided to walk around there. while we were doing so, an american guy came up to us and tried to sell us the meaning of life. for one peso
(10 US cents). seriously. he had written out on photocopies "¿qué significa la vida?" (what does life mean?).. thanks buddy. fun night, but we decided to head home when the group went to la estación, because we had a big day ahead on sunday...
sunday we got up early and went a place called teotihuacán and climbed pyramids, along with our trusty tourguide, NACHO! we climbed the 265 stairs of la pirámide del sol (the pyramid of the sun), which is where lots of people go to get "energy" from God, the sun, or whatever other deity they believe in. there was a nail on the top of the pyramid, at the very center, where you are supposed to pout your thumb and be supplied with energy. i did it.. not so sure about the energy, but it was really cool to see people with their hands up, praising and being supplied by whatever they believed in. it was also amazing for feel so small, so high up, and to think about the people that constructed the pyramids. we also climbed la pirámide de la luna, which was a little smaller than la pirámide del sol, but still had
oh, roomies
right after this picture was taken, our padres' door opened! we ran pretty fast. quite a few steep stairs. i felt like annie and was afraid i would roll down the pyramids like her in belice 😉... but luckily, nobody fell. it was really a wonderful day 😊 ... also, leslee and i realized we had 5 meals that day. augh! why is mexican food so good? hehe.
i only have 18 full days left in mexico. that's really not very many. it's hard for me to think about that it took me about 23 days to really allow myself to be happy here. but now, with that in mind, maybe i'll appreciate it more than i would have if i had just gone with it. all i know is i am happy here now, and i want to take advantage of all that i can while i am still here. this really is an amazing experience, and an amazing gift that i have been given.
