Hello everyone,
We visited the Mekong Delta and it’s really worth it. That’s where we meet the nicest Vietnamese people in Vietnam, where the towns are so lovely to have a stroll in, and the Mekong is definitely something to see. This immensity is impressive and magnificent.
From Ho Chi Minh City, we took a bus to Ben Tre. This is a lovely town where we walked along the Mekong looking at the huge boats passing by, having a stroll in the small alley of the market, enjoying the peaceful quiet life of the Mekong.
Then we pushed to Vinh Long, a truly pleasant town. From there we went to the floating market of Cai Be. This is a small market with not a lot of activities, but this was still nice to be on a small boat, living at the rhythm of the river, discovering small canals.
We "visited" the hospital of Vinh Long, because Bertrand felt quite bad and we were worried that it could be malaria (but it wasn’t) and for sure, you don’t want to be sick there! Nobody spoke English, the equipment was quite poor, but we did manage to have some
drugs and everything was alright after a couple of days.
From there we did a day trip to Sadec, the hometown of Marguerite Duras (for those who don’t know her, she was a brilliant French writer, who wrote “The lover” between other masterpiece, that I absolutely adore!) We saw the house of her lover, where he is buried, the school where her mother used to work, walk in the streets where she used to walk, in the market… I really enjoyed being there, to see what Maguerite Duras saw, even if it’s different from the time she was there, the atmosphere is still there.
After Vinh Long, we took a bus to Can Tho, the biggest city of the Mekong. From there, we visit the biggest floating market of the area which was really lively. We left early in the morning to catch a more than wonderful sunrise on the Mekong. That will be one of the scenes I will never forget from my travel. We visited another smaller floating market, but even if it was smaller, it was a lot better. We were in the middle of small boats with smiling people buying goods all around. We
visited as part at this tour some place where they make rice noddle. That was interesting. We spend something like 8 hours on the boat seeing so many things and that was a really good day.
In the town of Can Tho, there was a temple full of circular incenses absolutely gorgeous. We came back a couple of time to take more pictures of it.
From there, we rent a motorbike and took the road to go to Soc Trang. On the way, we visited a strange temple, with a lot of statues and a fun team of monks. Then in Soc Trang, there is a Cao Dai church always nice to visit.
We wanted to get back to Ho Chi Minh for the lunar new year, called Tet here, so we had to leave the delta to go back to HCMC. But we could have stayed there a bit longer because it was such a nice place to be.
I’ll tell you about Ho Chi Minh City latter.
Until then take care!

Tendresse. Maman
