Hello!

That’ll be my last post about Vietnam, because I’m already in Cambodia!

So let’s talk about Ho Chi Minh City, the capital of Vietnam. What is there to see? The atmosphere of some really busy streets (see the second video), the Chinese touch in Cholon and the French trace with the Opera, the old and classy hotels and the cathedral. There is also the story of the country that you can (re)discover in the museums. I visited the War Remnants Museum: don’t go there if you are sensitive to pictures! I couldn’t look at some of the pictures and end up leaving long time before having seen all of them. I know what man is capable to do and I don’t need to see it on pictures. But for those who want to see, this museum is very interesting. On a more positive note, you can see some lovely water puppets show at the History Museum.

We were there for the Tet (the new year), so all the town (as well as all the country) was decorated with a lot of Dragon, because 2012 is the year of the Dragon. On the night of the Tet (like New Year's Eve for us), we saw a wonderful show with dances, songs, lion and dragon dances.

The crazy thing was the next day and during all the week, everyone was going to the temples to get some good luck and success for the New Year. So all the temples were absolutely packed! (See the first video) with people. That was quite an experience!

On a day trip to HCMC, there is the biggest Cao Dai church in Vietnam at Tay Ninh. I decided to go there on my one (not with an organized tour) and … well, that was really long to arrive there and to get back, but I had more time in the church and that was a lot cheaper, and this is more authentic to took the local bus rather than a tourist bus. So it depend what you prefer: efficiency or authenticity, there’re both good!
The church is quite huge. All the Cao Dai churches are exactly on the same model, but if you have to visit one, this is the one. This religion was founded in Vietnam on 1926 as a fusion of occidental and oriental religions. They believe in a universal God, reincarnation, use the terminology and the structure of the catholic church but are influenced by Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. They have 3 main saints who, following their scriptures, signed a covenant between God and humanity (you can see the painting of the scene in all the Cao Dai Church: Sun Yat-sen (a Chinese president), Victor Hugo (a French writer) and Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm (a Vietnamese poet). Other saints are Buddha, Jesus, Mohammed, Shakespeare, Jeanne d’Arc and Napoleon. Besides saints, around 70 holy spirits exists that include American founding father Thomas Jefferson, British leader Winston Churchill, Russian revolutionary Lenin and Descartes, Louis Pasteur, Leon Tolstoy and Chinese poet Li Bo, among others... This is quite complicated!!!! I saw an office there and that is quite colourful: the followers are in white, but the most important people are in red, blue or yellow and there is traditional music. That was interesting.

So to conclude my opinion on Vietnam, this is between 2 things: this is a beautiful country, with breathtaking sceneries in the north, the Mekong delta, and the highlands. There are some magnificent cities like Hoi An. But the problem is the Vietnamese people, not all of them of course, but those in contact with tourists, they only want one thing, your money and they are far from being friendly. And especially in Ho Chi Minh City, there are a lot of thieves who snap your bag or camera, so don’t forget to be careful all the time. I would say that I’m happy I saw this country, but I’m not sure I’ll come back…

As Bertrand had to go back to Brazil to work, I’m back on my own again. Hopefully we’ll meet again soon!

Ce sera mon dernier post sur le Vietnam, parce que je suis déjà au Cambodge!

Alors parlons de Ho Chi Minh Ville, la capitale du Vietnam. Qu'est-ce qu'il y a à voir là-bas? L'atmosphère de certaines rues avec un trafic monstre (voir la deuxième vidéo), la touche chinoise de Cholon et la trace français avec l'Opéra, les anciens et élégants hôtels et la cathédrale. Il y a aussi l'histoire du pays que vous pouvez (re)découvrir dans les musées. J'ai visité le Musée de la guerre: ne pas y aller si vous êtes sensibles aux images! Je n’ai pu regarder certaines photos et suis partie bien avant d'avoir tout vu. Je sais ce que l'homme est capable de faire et je n'ai pas besoin de le voir sur image. Mais pour ceux qui veulent voir, ce musée est très intéressant. Sur une note plus positive, vous pouvez voir quelques spectacles de marionnettes d'eau au Musée Historique.

Nous étions là pour le Têt (nouvel an), alors toute la ville (ainsi que tout le pays) était décorée avec beaucoup de Dragon, parce que 2012 est l'année du Dragon. Dans la nuit du Têt (comme le réveillon pour nous), nous avons vu un magnifique spectacle avec des danses, des chants, des danses du dragon et du lion.

Le jour suivant et pendant toute la semaine, tout le monde va au temple pour obtenir un peu de chance et de réussite pour la nouvelle année. Ainsi, tous les temples sont été absolument bondés (Voir la première vidéo). Ce fut toute une expérience!

Pour une journée en dehors d’Ho Chi Minh Ville, il y a la plus grande Eglise Cao Dai du Vietnam à Tay Ninh. J'ai décidé d’y aller par moi-même (pas avec un voyage organisé) et ... c'était vraiment plus long pour y arriver et en revenir, mais j’avais plus de temps dans l'église et c’était beaucoup moins cher et c’est tout de même plus authentique de prendre le bus local plutôt qu'un bus touristique. Donc, cela dépend de ce que vous préférez: l'efficacité ou l'authenticité, les deux ont du bon!
L'église est assez énorme. Toutes les églises Cao Dai sont exactement sur le même modèle, mais si vous devez en visiter une, c'est celle-là. Cette religion a été fondée en 1926 au Vietnam par une fusion des religions occidentales et orientales. Ils croient en un dieu universel, à la réincarnation, utilisent la terminologie et la structure de l'Église catholique, mais sont influencés par le bouddhisme, le taoïsme et le confucianisme. D'autres saints sont Bouddha, Jésus, Mahomet, Shakespeare, Jeanne d'Arc et Napoléon. Outre les saints, autour de 70 saints esprits existent qui incluent l’américain Thomas Jefferson, le chef de file britannique Winston Churchill, le révolutionnaire russe Lénine et Descartes, Louis Pasteur, Léon Tolstoï et le poète chinois Li Bo, entre autres ... C'est assez compliqué !!! J'ai assisté à une messe là-bas qui était très colorée: les adeptes sont en blanc, mais les plus importants sont en rouge, bleu ou jaune et il y a la musique traditionnelle. C'etait vraiment interessant.

Donc, pour conclure mon opinion sur le Vietnam est mitigée: c'est un pays magnifique, avec des paysages à couper le souffle dans le nord, le delta du Mékong et les hauts plateaux. Il y a quelques villes magnifiques comme Hoi An. Mais le problème est le peuple vietnamien, pas tous bien sûr, mais ceux en contact avec les touristes, ils ne souhaitent qu'une chose, votre argent et ils sont loin d'être amicaux. Et surtout à Ho Chi Minh-Ville, il y a beaucoup de vol de sac ou d’appareil photo à l’arraché, alors n'oubliez pas de faire attention tout le temps. Je dirais que je suis contente d’avoir vu ce pays, mais je ne suis pas sûre d’y revenir un jour...

Comme Bertrand a dû retourner au Brésil pour travailler, je suis de nouveau toute seule. Mais j'espère que nous allons retrouver à nouveau bientôt!
