Roman Baths and Rituals
Usually bathing takes place in a home, in Rome men and women would often bathe in public places. To connect it to modern day it would be descirbed as a health club or spa. It was very relaxing. Small bath houses were called balneaes and they could be privately owned, but most were scattered througout the city for public use. The large baths called thermaes were used by the state. Boht the balneaes and the thermaes had a fee that was quite resonable. The baths were mostly done in use by dinner time. In the Baths there was also use of excercise. In the baths there were cabinets to put street clothes in and often slaves to help the men carry their gear. When excercising they would be lifting light weights or playing ball. When time to bathe, bathers would have dirt and oil scrapped from their bodies called a strigil. In the baths there were certain rooms based on temperature, so either they could start in the warm room moving cold or cold room moving hotter. After bathing men and women can stroll through the gardens, go to the library, watch performances, or buy food from vendors.
