Our last full day in NYC was a bit of a slower one compared with all the others.

We didn’t get cracking until about 8am and then met at 9am to go to a nearby Laundromat to get some clothes cleaned !! While the washing was going round and round we went to a lovely little café just round the corner and had a delicious breakfast. Oatmeal porridge and fresh fruit with a cup of tea was just great and Joy had a yogurt parfait and orange juice.

We then returned to the laundry and put clothes in the driers. Trevor and I then left the girls and we headed back to the hotel to pick up our gear and then walked up to Penn Station and caught the New Jersey Transit train to the Meadowlands Stadium complex over in New Jersey. We had pre-purchased tickets to the NY Giants v Seattle Seahawks NFL game there. It wasn’t hard to find our way this time as there were tens of thousands of NY Giants fans in their team colours al going to the same place just it was another case of doing what I have called the NY shuffle again, following everyone else in a slow moving line or mass of people.

They really do this big game thing well over here as Joy and I found on our last trip when we watched an NFL game in San Diego. The train took us right to the entrance at the stadium, very similar to Wellington Stadium, and we got back on a train after the game. It seemed to take no time at all before we were seated in the stadium and waiting for the hoopla to begin.

It was certainly great fun to be a part of the game day experience. I did discover that Americans are the same as us in one regard at football matches – they give the refs and other officials a hard time at every opportunity. Some of the language around us was scathing to say the least. Then to make matters worse the Giants unexpectedly lost after their quarterback had a shocker of a game and boy, there is nothing like an NFL fan when his team looses – they booed their team off the park. Don’t know if we would quite do that to the ABs but it was certainly a fun experience.

Back on the train(s) and back to the hotel eventually by about 6pm.

The girls had been shopping for the afternoon but I think late nights have caught up a bit as Joy had a bad headache all day and when we got back she was trying to shake it off with a sleep. Hopefully she isn’t coming down with anything!!

It appears as though the credit card was also spared as Joy didn’t buy much at all, a few small gifty type things and a dressy top/jacket.

Our last dinner in NYC was eaten in the ‘All American Brooklyn Diner’ in Times Square. We had seen this diner earlier in the week and when we got to TS tonight it was right in front of us so in we went.

Weeeeeelllllll, you don’t very often see Bruce leave food on a plate but I didn’t even get through half of what the menu called a ‘Fifteen Bite American Hotdog’ with onion rings and sauerkraut. It was huge and I couldn’t manage it at all. Joy had a chicken salad and that met with the same fate. Very large servings but not overly expensive.

Quick stop at the Skecher Shop for Joy to buy some nice flat shoes and back to the hotel for an earlyish night. It’s just after 11pm and this blog will get published without any photos as it takes too long to download then and we both need to get some sleep.

Tomorrow is another travel day and we leave by private limo service for Newark, New Jersey, airport at 9am for our flights to Watkins Glen and our few days with Albert and Judy Pearce, Ted’s Mum and Dad. We are really looking forward to this part of our trip as we have never met Albert and Judy but we have corresponded with them for the 20 years since Ted stayed with us in Waipukurau on a Rotary exchange.

That’s it for NYC. Onwards and upwards to new adventures!!

Holiday
Hello again Bruce and Joy, You certainly are packing heaps into your well deserved holiday. Is hard to believe that we have almost had a week of ours. Justine is still holding on.Mid wife thinks she may see her over the weekend but time will tell. I have had William a couple of days so that she can have a break. He is such a good little boy. Ross and I have been busy putting pea vine hay around some trees that we have planted. Was supposed to be quite wet today, but instead has been quite humid. We may well get a thunderstorm later tho. Big news in NZ is the stranding of a cargo ship off Tauranga and all the containers at a major list or even in the sea, A real maritime disaster. Had a call from Mary Stiles this morning to say that her daughter has found a wedding dress so I no longer need to be the dress maker. She was telling me that Trish Kyle ( I am sure I have the name right) is very ill. Been diagnosed with a brain tumor and riddled with cancer, so very sad. Enjoy the next part of your travels, and hopefully I will txt you in the next few days with news of a new grandchild. Take care and happy travels. Deirdre
