China but not as we know it

Hi All,

What a strange place. In parts of the city it's like being back in Europe. There's one thing that Shanghai does show and that's how much money there was, and still is, to be made in opium.
Our hostel was very close to the old part of the city which was more like the China we know, very poor. There were houses with only one room with the sink and cooking facilities outside. This part of the city reminded me a little of the hutongs in Beijing.
I must recommend the Uigher restaurant on Yishan Rd. The food was really good and the staff very helpful.
