Everything worked out with Arthur’s bike - we managed to find an appropriate wheel up in Colorado Springs (about 45 miles north) and were lucky enough to have a successful hitch there and back (the first cars to try to pick us up going both ways were brand new jaguars - we just couldn’t bring ourselves to lay the greasy bike across the new tan leather seats). Arthur’s arm is already starting to scab over; that should help to prevent infection as it’s hard to keep these things clean on the road. This morning we’re milking the last bits of our hotel time and then it’s out into the great plains of eastern Colorado (we hope the wind will be in our favor). If we continue to ride the way we’ve been riding, it looks like it’ll be about another month until we’re back on the east coast. We’re hoping that things will speed up a bit, perhaps the wind will be in our favor through parts of Kansas - given that the climbing is over for now, I doubt we’ll be going any slower. Plus, our bodies our adjusting to the riding - we used to pound food all day but now we’re starting to get back to eating normally. I think we’re riding the miles more quickly with less caloric expenditure and wear on our bodies (what a relief to our wallets) - rather than immediately falling asleep after the day’s ride, we find we still have energy in the evening. Arthur’s decided to call a Mulligan on the missing part of the trip - I think he has mixed feelings about revisiting the scene of the accident. This does create a bit of discontinuity in our path across the country, but so it goes.
We just wanted to say thank you to all the fantastic people who have helped us out along the way - the people who trusted us enough to pick us up at the side of the road and the crazy stories they’ve shared, the friends we’ve met along the way who call us over and over to see how Arthur’s doing, the people who’ve taken us in, helped arrange accommodations for us, and all the people who give us the big thumbs up as we ride. If you ever have doubts about the kindness of humanity, go on a cross country bike ride. We run across the occasional bad seed, but the majority of people have just been absolutely fantastic. This sure has helped to reaffirm my faith in the kindness of people.
P.S. Congratulations to Chewtoy and Stacey - what a beautiful place to get married, you guys looked fantastic in the pictures (what a beautiful dress - our mouths were watering as you cut the cake)!
