Ha-Makhtesh Ha-Katan
We did many incredible and far beyond amazing things this week.
At the beginning of the week, we hiked to the Zohar Stronghold by the Dead Sea. It was an almost straight down hike. At first, it was raining a little, so we half slid down. We had lunch and then explored the Stronghold - which has walls made out of stones. We then climbed back up in the sweltering heat.
Later in the week, we hiked to two places. First,we hiked to a petrified forest. There were huge fallen old trees that looked like rock! There was rainbow colored sand. Then, we hiked the Small Crater in the Negev desert. It is called the ha-Makhtesh ha-Katan. The view was stunning! You could actually see where the crater's edges were!
One evening, we went to a play performed by a blind and deaf company of actors in a theatre in Jaffa/Tel Aviv. The play was called Not By Bread Alone. “Not by bread alone” was explained to mean that the actors do not stay alive by bread alone...but by their communication with other people. They shared their dreams with us. One woman played a song on the piano (from memory of when she could hear). The actors baked bread, which we got to try. They put on an amazing show!
Yesterday, we went to a Bedouin museum. There we learned about their culture and traditions. We came when they where having a great celebration in honor of the new woman's exhibit they were opening up. A man was playing an oud – a stringed instrument that looks like a lute. Almost everyone there was singing along with him when he played an old folk song. Four Bedouin girls were dancing! Then, the museum showed us the new exhibit, which was a wonderful quilt (made by Bedouin women) that had beautiful embroidered scenes displaying important aspects of Bedouin life!

In an earlier blog I dismissed the chocolate milk from Kibbitz Yotvata. After about 4 liters...I have changed my mind. It's great!!!

time
So much of what you have shown us is so ancient! Does this affect everyday life for most people? Maybe some cultures more than others? You've been there quite a while now, do you feel "at home" yet? Do you think living in another culture--multiple cultures -- has changed you forever? How do you describe what South Berwick, Maine is like to people you meet? I Love your blog!--

Wow!
Emily (and Abby), What a week you've had! Hiking and sliding, hearing someone play the oud while people sang along, seeing a play performed by blind and deaf actors, having a "Circle of Life" moment (what were you holding?) and finally being able to enjoy chocolate milk! All this in a distant land. Life is good. We miss you 'round here, xo sammie

WOW!!!
Hi Hon, Great pictures and wonderful commentaries. You and Abby will be accomplished tour guides by the time Aunt Marjie and I get there. Can't wait to see many of the amazing sights you've had on your blog. The views of the sea at Jaffa are really lovely. The Sheppards left about 2 hrs ago. They had a great time...hot sunny weather and everyone stayed well. Zoe misses you both soooo much. CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOU!!1

Out of Order!
I started in the middle and am reading backward and forward. Not an uninteresting way to go about things. Your travels sound fascinating. And what a history lesson!
