The Front of the apartment
Mom, there is the gate that you were so worried about. Before arriving in Cuenca I thought I was pretty prepared for what kind of apartments I was going to see and what I was getting into. ha ha. I had watched about 40 different episodes of House Hunters International, and I really thought that I knew what to expect of apartments in foreign countries. Well, let me tell you, nothing can actually prepare you.
The first apartment that I saw two days ago was a shared style. So you have your own room, but you share the bathroom, kitchen and the laundry room. This was not that big of deal, but I would be sharing these things with about 15 other rooms. In addition, the door to the room I would have rented was literally a closet door and the door to the bathroom was a wood board. So then I was on to the next. The next apartment had absolutely nothing in it. There was not furniture, no stove, no light fixtures, nothing. Then I went to an apartment that was pretty nice. I would be living with a local women and her baby. The apartment was a good size and she also had a beautiful terrace with a

Mom, you wil be happy to see that there are bars. lot of flowers. Well, I gave house hunting a rest for the day, but then the following day I was back at it. After seeing one apartment that was freakishly expensive and then two that were really far away, I decided to go back to the women with the baby and ask when I could move in. When I got there she said that she would be happy to have me move in and that I could move in, in 10 days. In the states I know this may seem like a short period of time, but in Ecuador you can move into an apartment within a day or two. If I would have waited ten days for the apartment I would have spent more than two months rent just by staying in my hostal. So I told the nice lady and her baby good bye, and I was off again.
I went to a few more apartments. They were all around town. Most of the apartments close to my school were in really rough shape, but all the nice apartments were too far away. Well, after looking at 9 different apartments I finally found the one for me. It
is about 10 blocks away from my school. It does have a common living area (bathroom, kitchen, living room and dining room), but this place was much smaller with only 5 rooms. The other bonus is that there are only two people living there at the moment and I would be the third. Oh and the other two things that blew my mind were the fact that the apartment has a patio and a yard in back. Ironically, this apartment was also the cheapest out of all the apartments I looked at. I will be paying $95 a month for the apartment, and that includes utilities. So, it is a pretty sweet deal. The greatest part was when I asked the lady showing me the apartment when I could move in and she handed me the keys. I did not sign a paper or give her any money, but she handed me the keys.
Take a look at the pictures of the apartment. I wish I took pictures of the other apartments so that you could have something to compare it to, but I am very happy with the one I chose. I put the pictures in the order
of which you would see them as you walked into my apartment. Hopefully it will make more sense that way. Talk to you all soon!
