Normal Life at Deakin Hall & Uni
I'm enjoying living at the halls (of residence) here. Whenever I step out of my room, there's always somebody around. The nights are mostly spend in the projector room (ground floor), lounge with tv/pool tables (first floor) or in the loft with tv (third floor). If its nice weather, the courtyard is the place where everyone gathers. The 23rd of February, the courtyard of Deakin Hall resembled a small beauty salon. Kathryn was gettting a hair cut at the picnic tables and Sean's chest was waxed on the grass.
That might seem odd to you, but it is quite normal/even more odd if you think of the fact that this particular night we all dressed up in our bed sheets to party. They weren't called bed sheets any more though when we were wearing them. With some help from youtube we turned our bed sheets into fancy
togas!.
On the 25th it was time for some serious Australian wildlife spotting. The spotted wildlife wasn't completely wild though, because we went to Healesville Sanctuary, a wildlife park just outside of Melbourne. My favourite was the Koala. Despite the fact that they didn't do
much, it was very entertaining to watch their flufflyness. All they basically do is sleep, and on the rare occasions that they wake up, they simply need to grab the closest branch of the tree they're in to get some food.
At night we went out into the city with quite a big group. Because we had someone with us who knew his way around in Melbourne, we ended up in some nice bars/clubs.
It was time to explore the city some more on the 26th. One option was to join other Deakins on their pubcrawl, which started at noon (!). The other option was to enjoy the good weather and to actually see something else than just the inside of bars the whole afternoon. Needless to say that I went with option 2. It was a good day and I saw many parts of the city which I hadn't been to before. We started the day in the botanical gardens in the south of the city and ended up canoeing in the north-east of the city, before meeting up with the others still doing the pubcrawl at 7 p.m.
I viewed the attempted world's largest pizza ever
made at the market in the Italian district on Sunday. It was narrow and extremely long. I do not know whether they succeeded to make it into the Guinness book of records. The Italian district is quite big and is packed with all the clichés: (pizza) restaurants, gelaterias and to add to the Italian atmosphere: Tuscan music.
After 2.5 months of holiday, my semester started last monday. Time to get back to work again. Sounds more demanding than it has actually been up till so far, “work” in one of my courses even includes a mandatory 4-day surfcamp and a 3-day bushwalking trip – the course is called Experiencing the Australian Landscape. My neuroscience courses put a big focus on research, which is exciting as this is typically missing at UCU because of the lack of labs.
Saturday March 5th, I went into the outdoors with the bushwalking club. During the day the group was split up over three activities: rogaining (orienteering), mountainbiking and kayaking. It was sunny and 25 degrees, so perfect weather to spend the day outside. I especially enjoyed the mountainbiking over narrow paths.

Koala's zijn echt zoooo lief! Leuk om te lezen hoe het met je gaat en hoe je Melbourne ontdekt. Ben benieuwd naar je verhalen als je weer aan de studie bent. xx
