On Monday after saying goodbye to our hosts at Hotel Keizershof, we shared a ride to the airport area in Amsterdam and picked up our car. It is a Renault Kangoo. It has lots of window space and rides well so we will be comfortable for the rest of the trip.

Our first stop was Hanover Germany (other than the great rest stops). I had difficulty using the overall city map in the Michelin atlas and could not navigate the streets very well. There are a ton of one way and "can't drive on" streets in Hanover... we finally found the tourist info center just before it closed, made reservations at a budget hotel and were off to find food. The beer was the local brew -- the wursts were long and skinny -- and the saurkraut was great. When we got to the hotel they had overbooked the budget section and we got upgraded to the tower with bath in the room and cable TV.

Yesterday morning we drove from Hanover to Berlin. I was able to do better getting us into Berlin and we were able to find the hostel, East Seven Hostel (yes, it is in the East Berlin section of the city). It is great! Gary found a parking spot right across the street. We reserved a double room that lets us have a private sleeping room with the bathrooms across the hall. Everything has been updated and is clean with a great kitchen and gathering room... But it rained and sprinkled all evening. We walked up the street and found an outdoor sausage stand. We had sausages, fries and beer and stood under big umbrellas at the patio tables.

We are off this morning to begin our introduction to sights of Berlin.

Berlin
Great update!. I'm interested in hearing about everything, so don't leave anything out. Cobblestones, lederhosen, crowds, funny signs, funny traffic, weather, etc. I'm looking forward to it all. Lorie will be back in Honolulu on Saturday. She has no internet, so when I talk to her daily on the phone, I tell her what you're doing. Are you going to try and find Hilter's Bunker? Checkpoint Charlie? The Candy-bomber's targets? Cheers, p
