QUEBEC CITY - Mon 23 Aug 2010

We left Adam at the camp site at Manic 2 changing his tyres back from knobblies to road tyres. We had crossed into Labrador on the ferry with Adam and although not ridden with him had seen him each day and stayed at a few places. He was from Long Island and had ridden his Triumph Tiger up to do the Trans Lab Highway. Hope you made it home in one piece Adam.

We headed along the edge of the St Lawrence River which, looks like a sea it is so wide, in glorious sunshine and arrived on the outskirts of Quebec City just as it was getting dark so booked into a motel.

Tue 24 Aug

Moved ourselves to the lovely municipal campsite, washed our filthy bikes, took Sally's to the BMW dealer and they kindly squeezed in an oil change, did our laundry and relaxed in the sunshine.

Wed 25 Aug

Took the free bus from the camp site into old Quebec City - what a place, it reminded Sally so much of France that she got quite homesick. We found a little cafe for a 3 course plat du jour for just $8. The place is very relaxed with street markets and artists.

UPCOUNTRY QUEBEC

We then headed out of Quebec City and have spent a few days along the edge of the fjord which runs in from the St Lawrence River up towards Lac St Jean. We took an afternoon's boat trip in the hope of seeing some whales but were not lucky. We stayed in the beautiful village of St Rose du Nord where we found a restaurant serving the best food we have had including wild boar and caribou sausages and bison burgers.

We are now on the western edge of Quebec having travelled many miles on roads flanked by fir trees which is getting a bit monotonous. As we travelled quite far north yesterday we found ourselves in a Cree village of Waswanipi and it was interesting to talk to the people there.

Although it is currently over 30 degrees C (90ishF) we have been told that in 4 weeks time it might be snowing!!

Great camp site on the beach of a lake last night at Senneterre in our new bigger tent that is twice the size and 6 feet high but packs up to the same size.

THE LANGUAGE

Many people in Quebec seem to speak only French. We have had people who are desparate to talk to us and we have struggled through in French and English mix. However, we have come across some people who say they do not speak English but after a while, particularly when they find we are from England (and not from where? the rest of Canada? the USA?) suddenly they can speak English very well!!
