We spent most of the day on Friday touring the Midway aircraft carrier. They have it set up really well...they give you headphones for the self-guided tour and it's really interesting and informative. There are also a LOT of retired veterans (some who served on the Midway) around that share their experiences and knowledge of the carrier. It was truly amazing how massive the ship is...truly a floating city!!
We then walked around the Gaslight district for a bit...as it was Friday night, there were a mix of tourists and worker bees just getting off work for the week. It was interesting to listen to their weekend plans!!
We met a nice young couple that have been in the area for about 5 years. They were sharing their favorite spots around town. It's amazing to visit with people and hear their "stories"...
Yesterday we drove south to Imperial Beach, as they were having a sand castle contest. We had read that the children's contest was Saturday and the adults on Sunday, but there wasn't much castle building...there were a lot of vendors set up, and people walking the beach and pier...one of the adult groups was building a
castle...looked like it was going to be the entrance to the contest on Sunday. We hopped back in the car and headed for Coronado Island. We had lunch at the Diner there and were going to walk on the beach. $10 to park your car at the beach, so we headed back to Pacific Beach to do our walking!! Spent a couple of hours walking down the beach and boardwalk, then off to find dinner. We ate at RT's Longboard Grill. They were going to have the UFC 117 on, so we stayed to watch. We were going to stay for the band, but they took our barstools away from us (they took all of the chairs and tables out of the restaurant so that the only place to sit were a few booths that were built in. Needless to say, we headed home!! It was really odd!! Glenn asked why they took the chairs out, but didn't really get an answer that made sense...
Today we're headed northeast to the Indio area...
