Chester and her cub
Jorge was in love at first site. Day 1 of our Nicaraguan Adventure, 3-Aug-2010
The adventure started by flying out of Houston into Managua, Nicaragua. Chester of course insisted on getting to the airport at least 90 minutes before the flight left, while Kirsten was doing her best to spend as little of time possible in the airport. She did drive to the wrong terminal to ensure shaving off a few minutes, but it didn’t work as well as she had planned. Flight was on time and uneventful, which it should be.
We arrived to a rainy capital, oh yeah, it is the rainy season down here, so we were expected a few showers. The luggage made it, which is always a good sign and so was our driver. We took a 2 hour drive to San Jorge to get on a ferry so we could spend two days on a tiny island located in the middle Lake Nicaragua. After getting to the port, Kirsten negotiated the first of two treks up volcanoes. Hector was very pleasant and funny and hopefully didn’t screw us out of anything. Jorge, a young 25 year-old guide was enamored by Chester’s beauty and grace. He said she thought that God

Out of jealousy, Kirsten mentioned that a devil or two must have been thrown down as well. So even though Hector said that we would not be able to make the 8 hour round trip trek up the volcano, Kirsten and Chester insisted they could do it. Stay tuned to day two to see who was right. So after Hector and Jorge dragged our luggage through the mud to the ferry, we were off on another 1 hour journey to the island of Ometepe. Everyone on the ferry ride was easily 12-17 years younger than Kirsten and Chester. They were dirty, insect bitten and bruised. We definitely stuck out with our newly manicured fingers and toes, no backpacks, no cigarettes, and no stink. Plus we didn’t even have a travel Nicaragua book, we did our research online and paid with a credit card before hand, and when I say “we” it really means “Kirsten.”
Now the travel is not over yet. We avoided the rain out to the island and had a driver waiting for us as we got off the ferry. We traveled over rain soaked mud

Kirsten getting annoyed by the people in her way. roads, if you can call it an actual road. We passed several youth hostels and ECO-hotels, and were very glad that we kept going. Nicaragua is very organic and health conscious, and they probably don’t even know it. They have free range chickens, cows, goats, and even pigs. We got our first views of the two volcanoes, one active, one inactive. One guide said the active volcano erupted in April, other guide informed us that it erupted in 1956. So if you really want to know when it erupted, just google yourself.
We arrived to our hotel and Chester’s limited and muy malo Spanish is barely getting them by. The hotel is the best and most expensive on the island at $53/night. We upgraded so we could have air conditioning. The A/C is great when the resort’s generator works. Several times during the evening and night, the generator died. There is really no night life what so ever on the island. We had a decent meal of seafood and ended up in our rooms in bed by 8 pm. We had to determine who got the full size bed and who got the twin through paper-scissors-rock. Kirsten threw paper,
We will Conquer
We hope. Maderas Volcano Chester threw rock. Thankfully there was a “Monk” marathon on so we watched a few 4 or 5 episodes. The good thing is that most of the television programs are in English with Spanish subtitles, and not the other way around. God Forbid we read on this trip. As much as we tried, we didn’t last past 9 pm, knowing we had a big day and a big volcano ahead of us.
