Day 1 003
Tim filling up the tank ! Well.........after months of trying to decide whether or not to take a trip across the country this Summer, we finally decided we would give it one more shot. After a very long and grueling week of mishaps, minor household catastrophies and an unexpected medical emergency, we are officially on the road !! There's no turning back now so watch out America, HERE WE COME ! We spent the week battling the swimming pool, trash compactor, septic tank system and worst of all, the county tag office. Somehow we managed to survive, get the motorhome packed up and head on out to see this great big awesome place we call home. We worked until the wee hours of the morning getting bills paid, cleaning the house, threatening Kayla's life and preparing our house on wheels for our long journey. Tim and I decided not to set the alarm clock to wake us this morning, we were just gonna get up whenever the notion hit us and get on the road. That's exactly what we did, sometime around 10:00 am Be'Be' woke us up, we got our showers, kissed Kayla and Porkchop goodbye and off we went. We had spent the last couple
Day 1 006
The entrance to the Natutal Bridge of Alabama. of weeks tinkering with the map and the 1000 Places to See in the US and Canada book that we love so much and we had a pretty good idea of where we were headed. But before we could get out of town we had to make the dreaded trip to Wally World to stock up on food and all the neccesities. We made our way over to the Stockbridge Wal-Mart and in true form, Tim dropped me off at the front door and patiently waited for about 45 minutes for the call to come pick me up. It seems like that first trip is always the worse but we made it through and then headed on up to Forest Park to say goodbye to Daddy Jack and Grandma Peggy. We had already seen the kids, Porkchop and my parents this week so we just had this one last stop before we could hop on I-20 like there was no tomorrow. Daddy Jack and Grandma Peggy came out to the motorhome as we pulled up and I could just see the excitement in their eyes. They had a motorhome for the majority of their lives and took Tim and others
across America and Canada for years and they just love love love it. Oh how I wish Daddy Jack was able to go now........I would pack him up and carry him all over this country, but bless his heart, he can hardly walk now and it just tears me to pieces. We sat and talked for over an hour about all their trips and all the incredible memories they made traveling together but soon it was time to go. We hugged and kissed and waved goodbye as I watched Daddy Jack stumble into the garage....I swear that man is the sweetest thing that ever walked on Earth !! It was now around 2:15 pm and we were about to begin another journey together, one that I know is going to be just as fabulous as all the others before. As we were pulling onto I-75, I looked at Tim and he reached out for my hand and smiled and said "Boogity Boogity Boogity".......I know, you thought it was going to be something sweet and mushy.....sorry but the race had started and you know he's a true "race man". Oh well, we have plenty of time for all that sappy stuff,
I was just excited to finally get on the road. About an hour into the trip I remembered why I enjoy doing these trips so much............PEACE AND QUIET !! We drove for a while, well Tim drove, I rode, and then we came upon something that caught our eye. It's called the Natural Bridge of Alabama and the Indian Stone Head. I googled it really quick and we decided to stop and check it out. After paying the $2.50 admission fee and walking about 50 yards, we came upon the Indian Stone Head and it was pretty cool looking. I took a few pictures and then we made our way on up to the natural bridge. It was also very interesting.......it spans 148 feet long and 60 feet high. It reminded me alot of the arches in Arches National Park in Utah. We meandered our way back, strolled through the gift shop and then we were back on the road. Tim was getting hungry and we needed gas so I made sandwiches while he filled up the tank and we didn't stop again until we were all the way in Tupelo, Mississippi. Yes, all you Elvis lovers are gonna be
Day 1 012
The Indian Stone Head jealous, we went to Elvis' birthplace and his 15 acre memorial park in Tupelo. We spent some time there reading all about his life and stuff and then it was back on the road for us. We really wanted to make it all the way to Little Rock so we took a few pictures and then we were on our way. Tim drove and drove and drove for what seemed like forever and sometime around midnight we finally made it to Little Rock. We pulled into the Wal-Mart parking lot and prepared to settle in for the night when we look up and see this huge sign that says "NO OVERNIGHT PARKING". This was not good because Tim had been driving for hours and hours and was exhausted and now we had nowhere to stay. He programmed campsites and other Wal-Marts into old faithful Maggelan and off we were. In all of our travels across America and Canada, we have only came across two or three Wal-Marts who didn't allow overnight parking. Poor Tim.........I felt so sorry for him. And the saga continues........we get to the next Wal-Mart and it's actually a Sams now so we were still homeless. About
Day 1 025
Tim's getting all those Alabama bugs off the windshield ! 30 minutes later we finally find a Super Center that allows motorhomes so we parked under a security light and set up camp. We plan to get up bright and early tomorrow so we can check out Little Rock and then head on over to Hot Springs. Night, night. :-)
