19th & 20th April 2010 Hey Mickey you're so fine West from Indio to the outskirts of LA at Pamona, the Fairplex KOA (right by the Los Angeles Showground).
Did we strick it lucky or what? After the previous couple of days sitting at the MCC and observing all the 45ft plus Motorcoaches, we pulled into the campground only to find that part of the showground next door had an RV display on! Well, wild horses couldn't have kept us away. It was a two minute walk from our pitch to the otherside of the campground and through the pedestrian gate into the show. The first one we went it was for sale for $239,000 (reduced by $100,000) - it was all a bit bling for our liking, leather ceilings, leather seats and probably a leather mattress but we didn't stay long enough to find out!
One of the only issues about shows like this is that everyone is there to sell you something. We must have been approached by half a dozen different sales reps and each time we explained we were only visiting and weren't interested in buying but they still carried on with the sell.
Only a couple of them, a young lad who first approached us and Ryan (whose brother is in the CIA) and his wife actually listened and stopped selling!
We also took a look at a few 'fifth wheelers'. These are like caravans but designed to be pulled behind big trucks so they've got an extra bit that comes out over and above the the backend of the truck. Check them out
here. We love the steps up into the bedroom, it's like your own little apartment. One we looked at even had it's own little granny flat at the back with a sitting room, separate entrance, separate toilet and a set of stairs up to a mezzanine level bedroom! On the way back to the campsite the pedestrian entrance had been closed off so Jack learnt how to commando crawl under a steel chainlink fence. We are good parents, honest!
We couldn't come all this way and not go - half an hour down the road was Disneyland! Jonathan put it very well when he said, you've got to remember this was built in the 50's - the glossy Disney is in Florida. It wasn't as big or
as sparkly as I had expected and if anyone is considering a trip to Disney, I would suggest Florida over and above California.
We did have an awesome time all the same though. We took it easy and aimed for the toddler friendly rides - the photos's tend to cover them all, apart from Dumbo the flying elephant, our first ride of the day. We headed back to 'the beast for lunch and an afternoon sleep (Jack and Jonathan) and a read of a boook (Lucille). When it got to quarter to five and they were both still asleep (after going to bed about one thirty) I decided enough was enough, we were here to enjoy ourselves so we'd better get back out there in the pouring rain and have some fun! It started raining soon after we got back to 'the beast' and stopped shortly after we left it again - talk about timing (or is that something to do with a bucket and roses).
It's a good job we got there early in the morning and got lots done as coming back later in the afternoon we discovered that most of the toddler friendly rides had
closed because of the rain or because of the soon to start parade. We found ourselves a great position for the parade, but even the rain affected that too - something to do with the sidewalks being wet meant that there was no dancing or stopping. Still, Jack got blown a kiss from Truly Scrumptious of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang fame - what more could a little guy want or wish for!
