So, the west coast of the South Island gets 7 metres of rain a year. We haven't seen any yet! Then again, we just got here.

After our last post, we ended up spending our first night in a 'dorm' style accommodation. Up until then we'd been lucky with 'private' doubles with shared bathrooms. It wasn't so bad, but I'm (F) glad I wasn't the poor sucker on the bottom bunk below me. Honestly, who makes a bunk bed without a ladder of some kind? Let's just say my crazy early morning departure in the dark (we had to catch the 'Interislander' the next morning) was far from graceful. No blood though.

We then caught the ferry across from Windy Wellington over to Picton, admired the Queen Charlotte Sound, had some pretty awful fish and chips, and then drove northwest up to Able Tasman Nat'l Park. What a great park! We ended up spending three nights there, and got in some great hiking. They have a great 'water taxi' operation set up, where they'll ferry you and/or your packs wherever you'd like. Pictures will have to follow later, as we forgot our dang camera cable.

Well, high tide is approaching, which apparently is the time to see the blowholes at Punakaiki Rocks here, (and who wants to miss a good blowhole?) so we'll post more soon.

Glad you're having fun! Fraser, you can't resist throwing in a dirty comment can you? I approve of course.
