Arriving in New Zealand was a much smoother affair than 'visa-gate' of our Australia flight! We landed at 10pm and I clearly wasn't prepared for the 20 degree temperature drop from Australia and was immediately freezing in my shorts and t shirt so I was pleased for once the shuttle bus was actually where it said it would be at the right time. We stayed at the Jailhouse in Christchurch which was a really nice hostel with lots of character, the only downside was it lived up to it's 'Jail' name with a 9pm curfew on pretty much everything and as it was out of town most people seemed to just go to bed at this time, a definite constrast to the boxed-wine party all night culture of the Australian hostels. We only had 2 days ... read more

Left Hanmer Springs with the sun coming out, hard to leave another very pretty place. We joined the main road and turned toward Westport. Again amazing views of snow capped mountains, yellow broome and river beds. Although it is summer it feels like spring with a nip in the air. The road is easy with few other cars on it. Mostly the trees are pine and spruce with soft needles, but there is also pampas grass and the occasional palm tree really weird, then you see silver birch and other deciduous trees not always sure what they are. By the way the. Whales dive to 3000 ft not meters as I said before!. Stopped at Maruia Springs for coffee then continued on crossing rivers and again wide open plains or farmland, the scenery keeps changing, but ... read more

We're here!!! Too tired to write a bunch, but not too tired to post some photos from our adventures today: Guide picked us up at the airport in Christchurch in the morning and we took a nice drive through the Canterbury Plains. Saw tons of sheep! Drove through Arthur's Pass National Park and saw stunning views of mountains, lakes and rivers. Had a picnic lunch by a gorgeous lake. The weather was amazing today. Sunny most of the time, very little rain. Took a nice hour-long hike up to see the Devil's Punchbowl waterfall. Drove to the West Coast and took tons of photos of scenery along the way, including a stop at an old mining town and a visit with some wild Kea (alpine parrots). Arrived in Punakaiki after a fantastic drive by the Tasman ... read more

Enfin , ... read more

On arrival in New Zealand I was met by a huge weather shock, instead of the usual wall of warmth that hits you as you step off the plane it was the iciest wind in I have ever felt. It's safe to say that it didn't feel so nice after spending six weeks in Australia. The flight to New Zealand was so amazing, as we flew in I glanced out of the window thinking that the clouds looked reasonably odd and rather pointy, only to realise that the clouds were actually the New Zealand Alps which run down the centre of the South Island and take up most of it. It's hardly surprising that there are so few people here and so many sheep! On arrival in Christchurch I headed to my hostel expecting to see ... read more

Hello there! How are things? Well I hope. I've been journeying through New Zealand these past couple of weeks since I last wrote to you all, so I thought it was about time to tell you all about it. To be honest, as far as starts go in a new country it wasn't a great one as I got my wallet stolen on my very first night in Auckland. Not ideal by any means. Unfortunately this set the tone for the rest of my first week there as I went through my longest spell of bad luck on the whole trip so far. The next few days were spent in Auckland with a lot of faffing around, calling home, cancelling cards and all the other annoying things which accompany a lost wallet. Luckily Mum and Dad ... read more

... read more

On the drive to the DOC site we encountered one of the other forms of traffic jams that you find on South Island road - cows crossing! We had to wait for the farmer to move them across for milking. Ironically the van in front of us that you can see in the photos has steamed passed us only moments ago so I was really pleased to see them stuck!! We arrived at the DOC site just South of Hokitika in early afternoon and it had turned into a beautiful day after all the rain we had in Wanaka and across Haast pass. So we just sunbathed outside the van for the afternoon and spent the evening talking to the couple in the van next door. It was really nice to not be sitting in the ... read more

Punakaiki & The West Coast English (Lisa) 25/1 We left Reefton this morning to see the Pancake rocks at Punakaiki, a town located at the West Coast of the South Island. Panakaiki is known for its Pancake Rocks and blowholes. I always wondered how on earth something like these Pancake Rocks could have been formed and now I finally know. The Pancake Rocks consist of layers of limestone and mudrock. The distinctive shapes of the rocks are caused by the wind and water slowly breaking the rocks down. They are beautiful and very impressive to look at. We continued our way along the west coast. Evening had already kicked in when we arrived at our Holiday Park near Fox Glacier.
