We stayed in the historic center of Salvador known as the Pelourinho (Pel).

In English, "Pelourinho" means whipping-post. It was named as such because it is where Africans were sold into slavery upon arriving in Salvador. Most of the buildings in the Pel were built while Brazil was a Portuguese colony. Brazil was the seat of the Portuguese Monarch during the period that Napoleon's Army possessed Portugal. The King of Portugal moved to Brazil until Europe was able to push the French back into France. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Portugal_(1777%E2%80%931834). Salvador lived up to its reputation of colorful food, people, and music. It is very photogenic.

Wolfgang and Miranda (of Amsterdam), who we met in the Amazon jungle, typically stay in hostels when they travel, so we thought we would give it a try. We stayed in a Hostel in Pelourinho. It is a charming old house with AC and a bathroom in each bedroom. The common areas are furnished with antiques and there is a large courtyard where meals are served. It was not exactly roughing it like we had thought.

If I can convince Kim to give up hostels for camping, we can take this travel campaign to the next level. We could just wander about the planet with one change of clothes and a sleeping bag. She is not a big fan of bugs, so camping may not be an easy sell, plus we love cities. If you camp in the city they call that homeless. We are down to one carry-on size piece of luggage each when we travel.

Wow -One carry on each!!
You two are amazing. Deb would really be impressed with the luggage. Sometimes when I read your blogs I feel like I have been to all these great sites myself. As much as I miss you I am happy just knowing what a great time you're having seeing all the wonderful countries of the world. Speaking of growing rich, wow, Napoleon Hill gould learn from you. I must admit that your sister Jennifer is a dynamic life coach to have helped you decide to spend your life this way. Can't imagine what comes next!! I love you both. MOM xxxxxx00000
