San Agustin
Museo Arquelogico Left Popayan early, Johnny the French dude is the last addition to our group of now 5. At the bus station we got swarmed by bus conductors wanting our fare, they were pushing and shoving each other, we went to the bus company that gave us the cheapest fare(16,000 pesos). We had a quick breakfast then hopped on to the collectivo van. Scenic windy road trip to rough gravel roads all of us but Johnny were at the back of the van and we felt every dibs on that freakin road. 3 1/2 hours later we got to the junction where we got dropped off and a taxi took us to San Agustin town. They let us off at the front of the office of the bus company, we got a card for Casa japonesa a new hostel, it was up the hill 10 minute walk, we checked it out, looks alright for 10.000 pesos only so we stayed. Johnny and Elliot got their own rooms. we met 2 other guests there two Kiwis Stephen and Adam nice cool guys who hadnt seen the ruins in their 2 days there, just chilling basically.
We took a taxi and visited the Museo
San Agustin
Museo Arquelogico Arqueologico, very interesting, the complex is huge and most of the statues have this fangs on them, very weird. We got tired of walking around in this huge area, when we got to the Bosque delos Altos my memory card went crazy and decided to to delete most of the fotos i took in this section, so annoyed but at least the others were intact. We took a collectivo back to town and hope to get drunk.
The town is nice and chilled, nothing much really to do here other than visiting the ruins, the people are nice, friendly as like every small town in Colombia. On our 1st night we decided to get drunk in town then some more in the hostel. We drunk rhum and coke, i was the 1st to go, straight to bed, apparently Elliot was trying to wake me up but never did. Midnight I suddenly come alive, looked for everyone, all gone to bed but Cristina, we went down to check on Johnny, he was sat in the toilet for about an hour staring blank, we got spooked out so we went back to bed.
We booked a trip around to visit
San Agustin
Museo Arquelogico the ruins, after a hearty breakfast made by the folks at the Casa Japonesa for 4,000 pesos Rapha was our guide, nice old gentleman came to pick us up. Our jeep took us to some fantastic scenery outside of town, mountains, gorges, hills, very green vegetation. We stopped at this petroglyph rock with a sort of an alien carving, Rapha claimed he is the only one who brings tourists here, we doubt it though.. he brought a brush to clean the moss that has grown on the rock, the way was slippy but worth it. next stop to a sugar cane/panela processing factory, from raw material9sugar cane) we watched as they make it into this sticky consistency and they made it into square panelas. They also offered us sweet drinks and candies, i did not get them they were too sweet for me. Elliot and Cristina bought some sweets which we called sugar dicks as they are shaped like it wrapped in corn husk.
Also stopped by Rio Magdalena where we saw shiny colorful rocks and some fossils, apparently this was volcanic in origin and was under the ancient sea bed before.
Had a great lunch then visited the Altos
San Agustin
junction drop off delos Idolos where Elliot exhibited his farting prowess while visiting the ancient ruins. the complex is huge, the carvings have good details on them and after seeing a few we got tired of it.Oh and we also visited this town called San Juan de Isnos where we saw some burial sites, boring really. Alto de las Piedras was next, got to those quickly, dont get me wrong the statues were all cool but we all got tired of hiking those hills! We went to see 2 waterfalls, one of them was the 3rd highest in South America, we saw lulo plants thick with fruits, we went crazy taking fotos of it cause it looks cool. then we eventually headed back to town but our jeep broke down, no wonder we smelled gasoline all day , spark plug fell out until it just rattled and we have to stop and fix it.
Got dropped off into town and quickly we searched for a bar to chill, we bought beers and sat outside and enjoy a few drinks while people watching. We met Johnny and said our goodbyes, he leaves tonight for Bogota. We ate at a pizza place, good pizzeria
owned by a French woman i think. Then back to the hostel to get drunk some more with rhum and coke, i called it an early night, quite tired from a long day of statues and hill climbing, we set off tomorrow to Tierradentro, we gathered all our options on how to get there from different people in town.
