2-10-09 We set off early & the scenery is pretty boring, flat & not many trees, you cant see the ocean , so I settled back & read a book. We got fuel at Sandfire Roadhouse & had a drink an ice cream. We got to Pardoo Roadhouse & topped up with fuel & had lunch & then pushed on to De Grey River free spot. We travelled 388 km’s today. It was a pretty windy trip & used a bit of fuel, never mind. When we arrived at De Grey, we stopped & walked the length of the camp area & right at the end there was a great spot on the river bank near the train bridge. We drove down the easy way, & set up, it is a lovely spot. At the moment the river is low & it is very dusty, its not too bad today as it is only 29 deg with a breeze. By the time we set up, Den put the generator on & organised the satellite TV. We went for a walk to see how much water was in the river over the other side, we got talking to a nice couple &
walked back with them. There are a lot of cattle around & they come down twice a day to have a drink. It was time for tea, so we had a few drinks & watched TV & crashed into bed, thank goodness it had cooled down. It got quite cold through the night.
3-10-09 Woke up & had some breaky & had a lazy morning, it was hot again probably 30 deg today. Sitting having a cuppa & we had about 12 big cattle come walking beside the van to have a drink, Jessie started to bark & then Annie joined in. We made them sit & watch them have a drink & then walk back up the bank & eat the little bit of grass that was beside us. They were very good & they have hardly barked since. We had some lunch & decided to go into Port Hedland to get some food, water, fuel for the generator & another jerry can. Port Hedland is 80 km’s away, at least it is cool in the car & have a look around. Well not impressed with P H it reminds us of the Wollongong Steel Works, very dirty
& red dust everywhere. We went to find the info centre, closed !!!! We tried to find a water tap to fill up the water containers , none !!!! We then went shopping & asked where there was a Repco Centre & found that , closed !!!! What’s up with this town, you would think that on Sat avo most shops would be open. Went & got fuel at Woolworths, they did not sell jerry cans & would not let us fill up the containers with water , can you believe that. We then went looking for Pretty Pool, supposedly a nice spot near the beach with showers & loo’s, thought we might be able to fill up the water containers, no luck finding that, so we went home without the water & extra jerry can of fuel, great trip. We wont be staying there as none of the parks take dogs. We got home , unpacked the groceries , & I prepared tea while Den took around some loaves of bread we had bought extra, in case anyone needed them. We had tea & watched the sun go down behind the road bridge. Had another early night. It was
cool again tonight.
4-10-09 Happy Birthday Nicky, have a great day. Also, Happy Birthday Jan, don’t get too drunk. I slept in & then we had bacon, eggs, tomato & baked beans for breaky, the cows came around again & the girls only barked once I think they are learning. We went & had a swim ( & took the soap & had a tub, as water getting low) in the far part of the river & took the girls to cool off too. Its hot today 34 deg, we had a late lunch & we are going to have a lazy avo as the NRL Finals football is on live at 2pm this avo, Go Parra , for me & go Storms for Den. Have the girls covered with wet rags its so hot. I am doing my diary & catching up on naming my pictures. Bloody Storms won!!!!! Had tea & watched TV & went to bed.
5-10-09 Much the same today, very hot, 35 deg at lunch time. Den etched or names in a tree so when we come back we can remember our stay. We took the girls & all had a swim early
because the sand gets too hot to walk on, we then came back to the van & we both relaxed & we actually read, me a book & Den the Caravan Mag. Had lunch & then played Rumicube & Den packed up while I got tea. Made another damper tonight , yummmmy !!!! We are off to point Sampson tomorrow as we have heard it is nicer than Karratha . We are going to miss Port Hedland, did not like it at all. It’s very hot had to wet rags & put on the girls as they were puffing & panting. Tried to put on air con but blew the fuse in the van. We had the fridge in the car hooked up & it was so hot it was not coping as well. We think it was drawing too much power. We watched TV & then went to bed. Can’t sleep as no breeze tonight & hot as well so finishing off this blog so I can post it on the way.
