6-10-09 Well off to Point Sampson today, we have heard its nice. We packed up & got to Port Hedland at 10am, We needed bread , Fuel (97.9c gas & $1.41c petrol) & I needed some scripts. After getting all of the above we went to the port to take some pics to say we have been there. On the road we have not met anyone that impressed with Port Hedland. We setoff & the landscape changed from flat to a few mountains, we got to Whim Creek & there was a Caravan Park & Pub there, really quaint. We thought we might get a coffee there, but it did not open till 3pm. We had a wander, there was a lot of birds in cages & this one Cockatoo , we think was called Harry, he kept saying “Hello Harry” & dance cocky dance, He was very funny. We went on our way & passed through Roebourne, Cossack & got to the Cove Caravan Park at about 2pm. It is a new park, on the beach, $35 a night. We set up camp & I cleaned the dust out of the van while Den set up outside. We had a
late lunch then I went to do the washing. We made a few phone calls to Dad & Ivy, Mick, Nick & Maddy who is talking so well, Corey (who was at work), Val & Hayden , who was in for a chat. Then we rang Merry, & tried to talk to Brett & Kara but they were busy on the phone. Our free hour was up so will talk to a few more tomorrow. After happy hour I got tea prepared & we sat outside enjoying the breeze. After tea we watched TV & Den went to sleep early as he was tired. I posted the blog, caught up on the diary & went to bed. We will see what tomorrow brings & explore a little more. We did 288 km’s today
7-10-09 Decided to do some exploring today, so we headed down to the harbour which was very nice drove around the beaches & points where we saw the Cape Lambert Loading facilities off in the distance. Point Sampson is a lovely quiet village with nice beaches & fishing areas. We then went to the Heritage town of Cossack where years ago it was a booming Pearling
headquarters. In the 1950’s the town was abandoned, & between 1970’s & now restoration works are still going on. The buildings are magnificent such as the Courthouse, Bond Store, Customs House, Post & Telegraph Building, & the Galbraith Store. We wandered around & had a coffee & pie at the café there & bought a few souvenirs, we had a look at the Jetty & it was a great spot to fish. We then went & saw Settlers Beach & Lookout. We then went into the town of Wickham, it was a real mining town with dongers everywhere. We then went for a drive on dirt road to see if we could get to Cape Lambert, but the road was closed, so we went to look at the bay & boat Ramp. Another surprise how beautiful the beaches are. We drove home & took the girls for a walk & swim on the dog beach & then came home. I decided to have a rest as still not sleeping well. Den went to try out his new fishing rod. He got back with no fish, but had a good time. I had a talk to Kirsty, & Riley was gooing
in the background Riley has grown so much & is eating everything now, God bless him, he is 6 months old can you believe it, Kirsty is doing well. I was talking to Marg & Waz, when Den got back so Den talked to them for a while, We had leftover chilli chicken & Pasta for tea, then Den watches TV & I checked emails & played the computer.
8-10-09 Today we went to Karratha, for groceries, Jerry can, grog & to get the Waco fridge checked as it was not charging properly when we were off road. Den sorted that out thank God, so then we took Jessie to the Vet as she had a sore foot, $100 later. Then we did all our other jobs & finally bought 2 x casks of wine ( Yeah !!!!!!) First time since Darwin we could buy them. We filled up with gas which was 92.9 which it is starting to come down. We went & got our mail from the Post Office & then decided to have a look at Dampier. Another surprise, a sleepy little village with beautiful beaches, but not much else. We could see the big iron
ore ships being loaded at Pilbera Iron’s Parker Point Loading Facility. We bought fish & chips & had them in the park & then headed back. We then turned off & went to see the Woodside gas & Oil Visitors Centre which was interesting. By this time it was getting late so we headed for Point Sampson, about 60 km’s. We got home, unpacked the groceries & put them away, & Den packed t he car as we are going to Onslow tomorrow. We decided to go & have a drink at the Pub across the road & walked over to it, after 3 drinks we stumbled home & got a BBQ tea & I flaked , I was so tired. But I woke at 12.30 & could not sleep.
