Schloss Leopoldskron
This palace has the terrace from The Sound of Music that overlooks the lake at the Von Trapp residence. I awoke early this morning to take care of my every other week task - a long run. This would be 20 miles so I was pretty happy that there was quite a breakfast spread at the hostel to fuel me up. For the first time in well over a month I had eggs for breakfast. And there were meats and cheeses. Not just baguettes and other breads. Sweet.
I thought I’d take advantage of the distance I’d have to cover and travel along the river to take in much of what I wouldn’t see on the tours.
The weather was perfect - a bit cool, no rain, no wind. And the scenery was magnificent. The light green river flowed against my direction on the way out and the trees, which were just showing signs of a color change, blocked any heat from the sun. I needed all the help I could get with more than three hours of running to do and no iPod.
Around seven and a half miles in, after passing through a small Austrian village, I reached the end of the trail and had to turn around. I knew that when I got back
Mirabell Palace garden
The Mirabell Palace garden serves as a gateway to the city. to the starting point I’d have to do more mileage so I took a couple opportunities along the way back to break from my course and see the other side of the river.
I had expected to get back with at least 17 miles under my belt. My watch showed 16.7 miles. Not that far off but with soreness kicking in, it was enough to blow my concentration. The last 3.3 miles were ugly. The only thing that helped was a promise I made to myself at mile 18. Keep running the whole time and you can get two kebabs from this kebab place in town.
Having completed the rest of the run without stopping, I walked from my end point to this kebab place where I had gotten dinner last night. The kebab I had there last night was remarkable. It was the best I ever had, including Rafiqi’s in New York. The two today were just as good. Who’d have thought they’d have amazingly flavorful kebabs in Salzburg, Austria of all places?
After showering off, I set out for a guided tour of the city in the afternoon. It was through a company called Salzburg
Hohensalzburg Fortress
Hohensalzburg Fortress sits atop a hill which overlooks the town and the river. Sightseeing Tours. The company offers numerous tours of the immediate and surrounding areas.
The tour was part riding and part walking. The first part took a handful of us by passenger van through the city’s main sights. We also took a trip out to Hellbrunn Palace and Lake Leopoldskron (the lake featured as the backdrop to the Von Trapp residence in
The Sound of Music.
On the walking portion, we started at Mirabell Palace, with its beautifully decorated gardens and fountains. From there we walked across a bridge into the old city and saw Mozart’s birthplace, a couple markets, the cathedral, St. Peter’s Cemetery, the opera house and Residence Square. At one of the markets I came upon a pretzel stand with nine different types of pretzels and lots of candy. It was like a less commercial Auntie Anne’s. With my metabolism still revved up from this morning I couldn’t resist. I enjoyed a delicious apple pretzel.
After the tour ended, I walked back to the hostel and had dinner there. This one offers a dinner buffet to the guests each night, featuring a combination of local foods and standard fare.
I’ve now settled in to
Pretzel stand
The pretzel stand at the outdoor market featured a number of different flavored soft pretzels. I had an apple pretzel. catch up on emails and writing my journal entry/blog.
The Sound of Music is playing in the background again. It’s still really enjoyable for me but the staff has got to be a bit sick of it.
Tomorrow I head down to Obersalzburg to visit
Nazitown and the Eagle’s Nest.
