Day 479 (3/8/09)
Slightly underestimating how tired we were we were lucky to make it up by morning. Calling for a well needed day of R & R, the ashes celebrations had really taken their toll. With a map in hand we headed our for 'brunch' stopping at Oasis cafe in the Old town and straight into some traditional cuisine; Souvlaki and Greek Salad. We wandered around in the blistering heat, cooling our feet off in the ocean (not prepared for swimming at the time). But the airconditioned comfort willed us back. After getting slightly lost on the way back to our room, we booked our onward ferry and bludged on the net for a while. After a home made dinner on our balcony we headed back to the old town for another look, until our tired legs would no more!
Day 480
After another great sleep in we headed straight to the beach (after a considerable wait for the bus). Crystal clear warm waters, cloudless blue sky it was easy to see why the beach was packed. We spotted a vacant spot of rocky sand close to the shore and dumped our stuff and enjoyed a refreshing dip. We
spent the afternoon alternating between our books and the sea for our couple hours.
We wandered back after a late lunch greek pizza and salad for lunch. The evening we completed the circumference of the old town, dined on traditional meal of domineten, stuffed caps and tomato, beef stew and greek style lasanya and a couple local brews at Ipiros in the town square.
Day 481
After a morning by the beach, we caught the bus to Gennadi; a fishing small village south of Lindos. We were picked up from the bus station by our friendly hosts at Effies rooms. A lovely self contained appartment with wi-fi and a garden bar. We regrettfully took on the recommendation of the middle restaurant by beach (its name best forgotten) , despite its beautiful locaton our seafood platter somewhat resembled a tray of bait. Disappointed we returned to Effies for a drink and game pool.
Day 482
We passed the supermarket picking up a heart breaky on the way to the beach. Waveless and rocky, but crystal clear water. We lost a few hours playing with about with our waterproof camera unfortunately failing to come up with any winners and enjoyed
comparably quiet beach to Rhodes Town.
After we had had our quota of sun we changed and caught the bus to Lindos, a stunning town overlooking the ocean. We wandered about the cobblestone streets, amidst the whitewashed buildings and countless souvenier shops. We had dinner Alex's rooftop restaurant as the sun set and the city began to sparkle, red snapper, swordfish, wine and cheesecake.. what more could you want?!
We spotted our bus from the bottom of the hill, desperate not to miss it we sprinted up the hill, only for it to leave ten minutes later!
Day 483
Up early we hired a moto to explore south of Rhodes. With a nothing more than a mudmap from Effies we headed south. (Unfortunately, we lost the map and have now forgotten the names of where we stopped.. opps) First stop was a little beach, nearly empty. After a quick swim we continued on our way, stopping at 'the windsurfing capital' we watched some impressive jumps over lunch (vegemite rolls... our standards are slipping) and as the surfers began to dwindle with the change of tide we were on our way again. Along the picturesque country roads overlooking the amazing
turquoise ocean until Monolithos castle, deciding the view of it on the cliff's edge was better than climbing it we took some snaps and took the direct route back to Gennedi. After a quick stop for dinner supplies from the supermarket (before it closed) we were back on the road again to Lagos a sandy beach midway between Gennedi and Lindos. After a evening swim and a game of beach tennis it was time to get the bike back.
Day 484
Up checked out, bus to Rhodes, local bus to Rhodes Airport. We watched party of 7 girls in front of us at checking in begin to panic and begin to empty their bags, only to discover the bag limit was 13KG! We too began to panic... we were a nearly 15kg over!! We pulled our packs apart, donning jeans, socks and shoes, and wrapped our jackets around our waists, with the flight due for take of in less then 15 minutes our flight attendant just shook her head and said 'just go'... score! (No excess baggage fine!).We boarded the tiny plane, resembling something we were more used to jumping out of then landing in.
We arrived an hour
later to Crete, grabbed our gear and collected our hire car for the week.
Driving on the right hand side of the road, in the left side of the car takes some getting used to, unfortunately Carly didn't quite get the hang of it, whilst slightly lost in Malaga bumping a curve, losing the hub and stuffing the tyre. But we made it to Camping Sisi in one piece (bar Carly's confidence). After a quick tyre change and a beer by the pool things were looking up. We walked into town along the beach for dinner (another poor choice.. or maybe Greek food just isn't our thing) and called it a night.
