12/7/09 Went into Alice Springs Markets today, all feeling a bit worse for wear. The Markets were large & lots of jewellery stalls & art work & food. We went shopping for a few supplies at Coles & beer at Liquor Land as we had run out ( guess what LL is not open on Sunday ) so after asking around we found a pub & stocked up again. Came back to the van & I had a rest & Den watched the V8’s, I cooked potato bake, fried rice , mushroom sauce, damper & salad, Gai had also had cooked rice so we combined our recourses & had a great tea. Even two of the girls over the back came & joined us for drinks & tea. We will have to stop partying, but we all had a good time.
13/7/09 Ivy’s birthday today , Happy Birthday Ivy, we rang her & wished her a great day. It was cold today only 17 deg, after yesterday being 27 a bit of a shock. We went & did the touristy thing, Anzac Hill & I saw a Desert Pea, went to the Overland Telegraph Station which was very interesting, then
the Woman’s Hall of Fame & the old goal . We then went & had a look at the Casino & had lunch there & came back to the van. I had not slept too well the night before & I was tired , so Den went to the Ghan museum while I had a rest with the girls. When Den got back, Tiger & Gai came over for a drink ( not a late one tonight ) as it was freezing, we had left overs for tea & watched TV & I caught up on the blog.
14/7/09 Today was cold 16 deg but sunny, so we decided to go out to Standley Chasm, we did the walk at noon as the sun is directly overhead & the sun hitting the rocks changes the colours. It was great & worth the walk, just the sun peeping through the trees on the way to the Chasm was magical. We had lunch at the kiosk & then on the way back to Alice we stopped at Simpson’s Gap, a great spot that has a water hole at the end of it. The colours in the rocks were spectacular & it
was well worth seeing. On the way home we spotted some Stuart Desert Peas that were out & I have never seen anything like them, they are amazing. We went & did the groceries & then back to the van. The girls were so pleased to see us as they had been alone for 6 hours but they were fine & had not made any noise. After unpacking we had happy hour with Tiger & Gai & when it got too cold to sit outside we called it quits & went inside to get tea. They are going to Gem Tree tomorrow , so we might catch up with them later on down the track. They have been great company, we will miss them. After tea we did our tax so we could post it off & I sorted photos. Time for bed.
15-7-09 I got up & had to face getting my tax done, Den had done his last night. Cleaning day, I still cant find a good maid, Den went into town to get new tyres for the car, $1400 , new boots are expensive. Then the car got a tub as some “nice Birds” had shat
all over it. Den posted the tax off & some parcels to the kids, he spent the avo packing up outside & me folding washing Bathing the dogs & getting tea. Den ducked in to get beer & wine & water (good mix eh) We were going to a pub called Bo Jangles that Nicky had recommended (sorry Nicky we did not make it next time) . Den watched the State of Origin, up the blues & I ended up in bed with a bad back . Den went to bed very pleased that NSW had won.
16/7/09 Off to Devils Marbles to spend the night, on the way we passed Tiger & Gai, we caught up with them at Devils Marbles. A great spot where the rocks are big & round like marbles. We set up & all went for a walk & the girls stayed in the van as no dogs out of the camp area. We dad a nice avo then came back to settle in for happy hour & a sit down as back not real good. Den had just got a beer out & a lady came & asked did anyone have a satellite
phone as they had done a wheel bearing in the van & could not move. Well good old Den & Tiger went to see if they could help, lucky the guy had the old bearings, Den rolled up his sleeves & said I can fix that to get you out of trouble. So he put the old bearings back in & another guy helped out too & the guy was very thankful . He offered him some money but Den said no & later on he the guy come back with a bottle of red wine for Dens trouble. After that we had a BBQ tea & a few more drinks & ended up a good night. We all climbed into bed tired but happy. We did 400km’s today.
17/7/09 Said goodbye to Tiger & Gai as they are going to Tennant Creek for a few days & then onto Mataranka Springs across & down to Barkley Homestead & back to QLD & NSW, so we wont see them again. We made our to Tennant Creek, Three Ways to Banka Banka Springs, what a gem of a place, no power but nice hot showers & spring water you can
hook up to your van & yes Green Grass wonderful, the girls did not know what it was, Jessie even rolled in it. There was a kiosk there & a great pub & outdoor area & they had a sausage sizzle & a slide night. Den washed the awning & also the front & back of van & took advantage of the fresh spring water. We went over for a drink & sausage sanger & talked to a few people & we were going to stay for the slides but it got cold & most people went back to their vans, there must have been at least 40-45 vans there, it was full & they shut the gates. There is a walk & a waterhole there. The landscape is still surprising, it is flat, green & scrubby in some places & hilly in others , different to what we expected. We did 225 km’s today. The days are nice now but the nights are still cold.
