There were two main reasons we decided not to go to the Galapagos islands.
1. Money. We could not justify blowing one month´s budget on a five day tour.
2. Eco-respect. Back in October we saw a documentary about how the island and the unique animals living on it are being destroyed by the boat loads of tourists who visit every day. Some places are so special they should be left alone.
So with a clear conscience and the budget in tact, we decided to get our wildlife kicks elsewhere.
Appropriately nicknamed "The Poor Man´s Galapagos", the Islas de Ballestas are off the coast of Peru from Paracas. If you have visited the Galapagos Islands, I´m sure you´d find the Islas de Ballestas to be a poor Galapagos indeed. But for us they were just fine.
Not every day we see penguins and dolphins and sea lions.
