For our next stop on our backpacking adventure we made our way south by train to Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. We found out quickly that the trains in Eastern Europe operate a little slower than trains elsewhere. But, we arrived safely and only a hour late. Bratislava is one of the more random stops on this trip as we really didn't know much about it or what to expect. But I guess that is what made it exciting! Usually we've been able to rely on English or Spanish to get us by, but not here! Since our working knowledge of Slovakian doesn't go beyond "thank you" and "good morning" we have found a new way of communicating. Pointing and thumbs up, etc. Ordering at a restaurant is especially interesting. We basically wait for people around us to get food and then just point at what someone else has that looks good and hope for the best. It's really a surprise until it actually comes what we will be eating!

We really enjoyed walking around Bratislava. It's a very nice capital city and not busy AT ALL! At times it feels that Eau Claire or La Crosse is busier than this European capital. We are staying in a hostel across the street from the Presidental House (ie. White House of Slovakia). It seems odd to us that you can get right up to the building and no security guards. Overall it's clean, lots of good places to eat and the people here have been very friendly and patient with us. Saw the big sites to be seen here and have enjoyed listening to all the late 80's classic love songs that they seem to be always playing (Phil Collins is a wonder here!) At least we can understand the music!

The food (which we didn't necessarily knowingly select) has been delicious! One of the big specialties here is small dumplings mixed with sauces, spices, veggies and meat - specifically bacon. We also today had a pea soup that was really good. Andy has found a local kolachie stand so he can continue to enjoy the hometown treat.
