One of Spain’s most beautiful towns, Toledo, was our next stop on our way through Spain with our Sparta group. We were there for about 5 hours, enjoying the medieval streets and the great views that this city provides. The town was just completing their large Corupus Christi celebration so we got to see the reminents of that. We went through the cathedral of Toledo which is the 10th largest in the world. There are 80 some churches in Toledo so that is how the phrase ¨Holy Toledo¨was coined. We also got to see some of their famous swords. Some of the worlds best swords are made in Toledo. I did not buy one this time … but some day. (To go with the matador outfit!)

After our time in Toledo we made our way through “La Mancha” and got to see the olive trees, wheat fields, and of course the wind mills that inspired Miguel Cervante’s work Don Quijote y Sancho Panza! We also got to enjoy a typcial lunch with the Wylands of Migas (sort of like Thanksgiving stuffing) and Pisto (vegetable mush), 2 country side classics!

Our day of travel on the bus ended in Granada, but not without a surprise. We had hoped that we would see Sarah (Steph’s sister) in Granada because that is where she is living and studying right now. But we kind of thought that was not going to happen considering out hotel was way on the outskirts of town and far from where Sarah lives. However, we learned an important lesson … never underestimate ,the will power of BEAR! She used bus, taxi and her great hiking ability to find us on the other end of town. What DETERMINATION. We were able to have supper with Sarah and get caught up … what a GREAT surprise.

The following day we toured La Alhambra, an impressive palace from the Muslim times in Spanish history. The most entertaining part of this place was not the gardens (although they were beautiful) but rather the huge splash we heard from the guy who was backing up to take a picture and fell completely underwater in one of the ponds in the gardens. Poor guy. He emerged from underwater with his SLR camera, iphone, etc. The funniest part was that after getting out of the pond he had to jump back into the pond and go underwater fishing for his wallet. I guess we learned to watch our step!
