Edit Blog Post
Well our one year is up and this is our last blog in Korea. The last month here has been busy and stressful and Jenna and I are both ready to get out of Korea and go see some more places. We have been doing a lot in the last month. We have had a visit from my mom (Sally), gone to a baseball game, been to some going away parties and we also visited the DMZ.
Our visit to the DMZ was pretty cool. If you don't know what this is it is the border between North and South Korea and last I heard it was also the most heavily guarded border in the world. It was a pretty cool trip we got to see Freedom Bridge which was a bridge that many people walked across when they were closing the border. Koreans had to choose weather they wanted to stay in North Korea or South Korea so many people used that bridge to travel between the countries. Also many families were separated because they weren't sure which side their loved ones were on. While we were at the DMZ we also got to go into a tunnel that
was found by South Korea. The tunnel was made by North Korea and it was dug under the border so the North Koreans could attack Seoul. It was cool to walk through but it was small, Jenna and I had to hunch down the whole time. The tunnel was long too, we don't have any pictures from inside the tunnel because they won't let you take photos. The actual DMZ area is pretty amazing, its about 4 km or about 2.5 miles of land that makes up the border. This area is full of landmines and had guns pointed at it 24 hours a day. The amazing thing is they say that since no one has touched the land since 1953 their are new species of plants and animals living and growing in there. I was disappointed that we couldn't get a better picture of North Korea but we were lucky to get what we got. I did get one cool souvenir, North Korea Soju, which I finished the other night and it made me sick.
Our visit from my mom went well, well at least after the start. Jenna planned almost everyday of my mom's stay; the one
thing we forgot to factor in was which side of the street the bus dropped her off on. We messed that up pretty good. My mom's first fifteen minutes in Korea must have been pretty scary, but we found her and got her settled in and the rest of her stay went well. While she was here we visited some big landmarks in Korea, Seoul tower, and many temples, we also saw two good shows. First we went on the Seoul bus tour this was actually pretty nice. It’s a big tour bus that takes you to big shopping districts and landmarks and temples. We spent all day on the bus tour on Saturday and came home exhausted. The next day we went to a traditional Korean performance which was weird but cultural. The week was somewhat hectic trying to work during the day and sightsee at night. We did however get to take one day off each. Jenna went to all the main shopping market and Josh took Sally to one of the largest palaces in Seoul. We let Sally try all the typical things that we have been eating....she seemed to like most of it. Later during her
trip we took her to go see a Korean cooking show performance... which was amazing. It was performed like it should have been on the Las Vegas strip with Cirque du Soleil. Her whole trip seemed to fly by and before we knew it she was leaving. ;-(
The weekend after Sally left we had a going away party that started off at an all you can eat Italian... what you thought we would eat Korean? The night ended eventually and we said good bye to many people that we will never see again.
We have three more days before we leave for the Philippines and are really excited about our vacation. We still have so much to do with packing and planning! We will be vacation for the next 4 months but will still remain in contact through e-mails. We appreciate all the support and e-mails. We miss you all and can’t wait to come home!
