The future is now
I wanted to share with you my school.

It's about as old as UVA and unc, but has way more Nobel prize winners. Humboldt University was founded by two brothers of the same name...the King of Prussia (not the one outside Philly) gave them a palace for a campus, and it went from there. The focus was science, in contrast to the classics/philosophy/theology training that Oxbridge could get you at that time. R&D!

So there are several campuses/campi, and the main one is smack dab in the middle of town...the address is Unter den Linden 6. Guess what--that's not where I am! My department--Economic Geography--is somehow classified as a natural science (a la geography), so we're all the way to the south of town in a place called Adlershof. The campus is an old East German army base, adjacent to Johannisthal airfield, where one of the first wind tunnels amazingly survived the war. My department has two buildings...one modern, one East German army issue. Both are nice!

It takes me 40-60 minutes to get to Adlershof, and 15-30 to get to Mitte. There is an HU giftshop, and cuff links cost 30 euros. I shall bling. The "mensa"

The book I wanted was checked out
is the cafeteria, and a student can easily eat for under 2 euros. You need codes and approval to do anything, and that process took some time because I'm somehow not officially a student.

Anyhoo, here are some pictures...

This is an old factory, and now a one-month-old library. The book I wanted was still in transit.

Interesting
Rawley, Geography is far from my "long suit" so I appreciated the map of Europe on another screen. We have friends from The Netherlands who live in Woolwine! They were back visiting family when the husband had a terrible bike accident in the mountain area. He is in rehab and the outcome is still uncertain. Maarten Ankersmit is his name and he was quite the athlete. Hermeen, his wife, came home briefly to take care of taxes, etc. and is back there now. I see that they are your "neighbors". ....a small world! We are suppose to get snow Sat. That's okay with me. I have plenty of indoor projects waiting. We continue to enjoy the journal and pictures. Sometime tell us all what a typical day or week is like for you. Take care and keep warm, Coatesie
