Sunday 10th May It's Mom's day. We have an early breakfast of fried cinnamon apples, ham and eggs, at the Cracker Barrel and head for Dallas where we have booked a hotel for our final 3 nights. If you think I talk a lot about the food I am actually being quite restrained, we'll both be back on the healthy eating plan by next week-end but at the moment we are enjoying every carb...
We drove through the centre of Fort Worth which was very busy even though it was Sunday morning and we arrived at our hotel about noon. It was quite misty, not cold but overcast, we had a few lazy hours and then went out to have a look at Dallas. We were surprised how warm and sunny it had become after all the severe weather warnings over the last week or so, it really is a superb afternoon. The area is very upmarket with fantastic homes and beautiful gardens but the traffic is horrendous. We find a restaurant with a rhythm'n'blues theme serving barbecued food which was delicious, (we did have our breakfast very early and nothing since)!! I was given a flower for Mom's day.
Dallas
George and the Chevy We are going to Dealey Plaza tomorrow and we've been researching public transport, we're going to take the train.
Monday 11th It's my mum's birthday today so "Happy Birthday Mum". Well, the bad weather has finally caught up with us and we have woken up to torrential rain, we have just had breakfast and have decided to relax around the hotel for a couple of hours to see if it improves, we can hear thunder in the distance and we hope there isn't a tornado heading this way. At least the car is getting a good wash, it's been filthy since we drove through a cloud of bees on our first day. By about noon the rain had stopped and it was fairly pleasant so we caught the train into downtown Dallas. The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza is located on the sixth and seventh floors of an old warehouse which in 1963 was known as The Texas School Book Depository. The museum tours are self guided, with an audio guide. "John F. Kennedy and the Memory of a Nation", is a permanent historical exhibition that looks at the life, death and legacy of the 35th US
President. It features documentary films, historic footage and hundreds of photos and artifacts. The sniper's perch appears as it did on 22nd November 1963. We stood at the next window and looked out where JFK was shot. We felt priviledged to be able to visit such an important historical site, the whole exhibition is very interesting, photos are not allowed inside but we took some from the grassy knoll, which is just past the bend where the motorcade slowed down. We have seen these images so often on the TV and to see them in real-life is amazing. We visited the JFK grave in Washington in 2005 so in a way this completes a circle for us. As always here, the weather gets hotter by early evening and when we return to the car about 5pm the temperature is 96f.
Tuesday 12th It is a lovely morning, the good weather seems to have returned and we take the train into Dallas again to do a bit of shopping. We end up taking several trains as the shops are not downtown but a few train stops away. At about 5pm the temperature is about 95f. We

Famous window is the second down on right hand side have decided to take the car back to Hertz this afternoon instead of first thing in the morning as it will make tomorrow less stressful and we can stay at the hotel until about 12 noon and then take the shuttle to the airport for our flight home.
Wednesday Just the flight home to look forward to today. We have had an excellent breakfast that will last us until we eat on the plane, the weather is warm and humid, in fact it has been very humid the whole time we have been in Texas. As always we have had a marvellous time and met some very interesting people, we've avoided floods, fires, tornadoes and swine flu (we hope). We have lots of unique memories to take home, the Indian Reservations, the Petrified Forest and the Painted Desert. We've walked across the Four Corners and seen Buddy Holly's Fender guitar and glasses. We've walked down Main Street, Tombstone, the site of the gunfight at the OK Corral and stood on the exact place on Elm Street, Dallas where JFK was assassinated.
In all our travels in the US we still
Elm Street
from the grassy knoll; the spot where JFK was assassinated haven't seen anywhere that has topped our all-time favourite place, Yellowstone Park in Wyoming and we are planning a return visit sometime soon.
It will be great to arrive at Humberside airport tomorrow instead of Heathrow, looking forward to seeing you there Amy 9am sharp!!
