March 10, Tuesday

Up with a lot of moisture on the tent and bike cover. We must have had a very heavy dew, or fog rolling through, as I had to dry off both sides of the tent fly. Both of us had a great night's sleep, finally a bit of warmth through the night. We packed up and headed west - passing through the rest of lower Mississippi, along the gulf through Biloxi, Gulfport and Bay St. Louis. The devastation from Hurricane Katrina is still very evident along this road, lots of reconstruction, lots of places closed, or just demolished. Biloxi in particular was absolutely gorgeous, but still rebuilding. There were LOTS of lots available, and the beautiful sand beach runs forever. If I had some extra money I think I would be very interested in a place along the beach road in Biloxi, MS. Coffee north of Bay St. Louis, and then a short run along Interstate 10 to stop at the visitor center for maps. Sadly, the super-slab run was a waste, as the visitor center was closed for remodeling. We followed it another 10 or so miles, hopped off at a "tourist info" spot, got maps etc, and then rode US 90, the "back road" through the bayous into New Orleans. I made a reservation at a spot recommended by the German couple I met in Bunnell. Hotel St. Pierre, on the corner of Dumaine and Burgandy, in the French Quarter, is one of those "finds" that make the trip magical. It doesn't look like much from the front door, but once through the old lobby, you enter into a series of courtyards, small pools, fountains, shrubbery etc. that makes you feel like you're in old Europe somewhere. Our room was small (one double bed) but clean, the door opened directly onto the courtyard and pool, and the concierge was one of those interesting old guys with a great personality. To ease my security concerns, a guard is on duty all night and the parking, across the street, and out of immediate sight, has video surveillance. We went for a walk through the French Quarter, had supper at an open air market restaurant on Decatur and the river walk, while listening to a jazz quartet. Quel magnifique! Another great day.
