I spent a few days in Kanchanaburi, staying at a beautiful spot right on the river Kwai. The famous bridge over the river Kwai is about a quarter mile down the river. The Tiger Temple was recommended by a few people. All of the pictures I saw were of robed monks hanging out with tigers, sounded pretty good. There were tons of tourists and the whole thing was a little overrated, but I now have pictures of myself petting large tigers. If I could only turn it into a glow-in-the-dark poster.
There were a bunch of paid tour options, (waterfalls, train rides, etc) but they were a bit expensive and not that appealing. So I decided to rent a moto-bike (a mix between moped and motorcycle). Great decision. $5 for a 24hour rental. I rode through town and out to the countryside. It was sensational, flying past farms, l temples, orchards and rice fields. I spent hours just exploring. I saw a huge, bronze Buddha in the hills a few miles away and went to find it.
I went on a cool night-ride a few hours later, then woke up at sunrise to explore more. Thais do a morning ritual that involves offerings to a shrine and sometimes firworks. I saw a lot of this in people front yards up in the hills. Very rural.
Back to Bangkok.
