I lived in Macondo Hostel for almost 2 months in the town of San Gil, Colombia. One of the reasons I stayed in San Gil for so long was because of how much I enjoyed this hostel, its very helpful, chill, and informative owner Shaun the Aussie, its lovely Colombian lady staff of Blanca and Gloria, and the MANY other backpackers from all over the world that I got to meet and sometimes befriend while our time overlapped in this hostel. I truly enjoyed my time at Macondo. Comfy, friendly, and had all you needed.
Instead of feeling like just another backpacker who was paying for a bed for a couple nights in a strange hostel, it was like we were all just friends of Shaun and he was hosting us at his house for a few nights. Sometimes we had family style meals where we all cooked and ate together. Other times we ordered delivery and chowed down on pizza or chinease food. We played lots of card and board games...my personal favorite being the ridiculously fun ¨Pass the Pig¨. Many times we just sat and talked...sharing travel stories, life stories, and engaged in debates about politics, the economy,
history, or just silly not so important stuff. We watched all 3 presidential elections via the NPR website on the internet. Day trips to other towns, swimming holes, the local market were common. As were late nights in the hostel drinking Colombian beer and/or boxed wine, drinking down at the town´s central plaza with the rest of the town, or dancing at the local disco. Very fun times. I will be back for sure. 😊
